Hi all, For progress scroll down! This is just the story of the beginning of the project I recently saved this lovely little AX from the gaping maw of the local scrap merchants down in Brighton. It's a completely standard (bar the hugely questionable stickers all over it) base model mk1 AX. I've only pottered it round the block as it's radiator leaks a bit (new one should be here and fitted by the time you read this) and I've become utterly besotted with it. It's one of my favourite looking hatchbacks of all time and it puts a massive smile on my face. It's in need of some love and attention with regards to getting it running correctly though I am working on this by replacing various suspect parts and swotting up on how best to deal with the tricksy little single choke solex carb that sits proudly in the engine bay. Once I have it running in fine fettle I will get some proper photos with my camera and post them up in here. Ps, I shall update this post with photos once I get them on a hosting site. Hoping that Tapatalk will allow the photo to be uploaded! Only photo it seems to like of the ax on my phone.

MK1 AXs are super rare now. I agree with you; they are a fantastic looking hatch. Sadly overlooked for so long.
Looking forward to some pics.

Too afraid of stacking it! I am hoping one day to take the ax round the ring but possibly with a different powerplant. . . Got a thread going for your Passat dude? Mate of mine had a PD powered Bora that was close to 300hp and an ungodly amount of torque but that thing had mental money spent haha.

I've always liked the look of the AX, something most people can't understand.
I can't believe how quickly they've all seemed to disappear off the road.
Always had a part of me that wanted to stick Saxo VTS running gear and engine into one of these. However with the price of VTS's and the lack of AX's, I'll have to keep that one in the imagination!

There's a few for sale at the moment I think but they are becoming scarce. A lot of people do that, hell, a friend and I did that very swap on his old AX 5 door, they are mental with a vts swap! I'm hoping to slot in a phase one 106 Rallye engine in the new year, they sound incredible and are all alloy like the standard engine so I shouldn't have too much of a weight penalty for the power gained

Mate of mine had a PD powered Bora that was close to 300hp and an ungodly amount of torque but that thing had mental money spent haha. To be honest I think it’s the experience more than the weapon. I don’t want to wreck it but want to enjoy it too. I went in August but ended up not renting a car as it was lashing from the heavens - just as well as there was a 15 car pileup the same day! Used to have a thread on the UKPassats forum but never bothered updating it. So much done at this point! It wasn’t a mega money exercise to get it from the mapped 155bhp. - I threw away the BXE that was in it and modified the much stronger ARL unit from a MK4 golf that I bought from a mate with the HUGE Garrett GTB2260VK turbo strapped to the side. Standard PD150 injectors so far - 240 is the upper limit. Still running a dual mass and 6 speed bow w/open diff. I know that if I want to get to the 300bhp mark I’d need an LSD (€1000), solid flywheel and clutch (€1000) and injectors (yep, €1000). Probably also have to do a camshaft and head porting etc, shame as the cam kit was brand new a thousand miles before the turbo went in the car. I think all in as it was all secondhand with low mileage to get there was about €1000 all in for an extra 85bhp or so. Plus If I get bored I can gradually upgrade. On the cards before the ring are a rebuild for the KW Variant 2 coilovers, VW Racing Line anti-roll bars and Nankang NS2-R tyres. FIrst job however is to make better boost pipes from stainless as the hotchpotch of various OEM stuff is the weakest link. And wouldn’t it be a shame to completely remake the exhaust in 3” stainless from turbo to back boxes (full V6 system on their at the moment, too quiet!)

We had a diesel for a few years. I rebuilt a rear beam using thicker torsion and anti roll bars, fitted shorter front springs and a set of Forte wheels that are slightly wider then stock and it was great fun. When it got too rusty and nothing short of a full rebuild would save it I swapped the beam onto a 106 but not being a diesel it wasn't as much fun.

Come on JoshO it must be running by now?? and where are the pics of this sexy little beast?? Cheers steve Good news everyone! The mighty AX now has an MOT and I've been driving it around since changing the radiator and I love it! It's so slow and has so much body roll but it's brilliant. I also accidentally drove down to Eastbourne to pick up a saxo vts engine for it planning to upgrade the suspension and brakes then slot in the vts lump in time for the Weekender. I promise I shall get some photos uploaded asap.

Good stuff! 👍🏼 I've booked my tickets for RRG and am determined to get my AX there and up the hill. We could have a two car AX stand 😁👍🏻 If I remember correctly, AXOC had a stand there last year. There were quite a few AX’s there.

1.4 N/A Diesel with a 1.5 Saxo intake manifold and a lot of brave pills. Christ on a bike! I plan on taking my 240BHP diesel Passat there in June and I wont be using that many pills! Too afraid of stacking it! Part of the reason he got there was down to brave pills, but also track knowledge. Chasing times is what causes most crashes at the Nurburgring. I and a few others here could probably take off a minute but not from pushing too hard off our Personal Bests by having track knowledge. For somewhere like Cadwell Park that can take time but it is easier to do since it is a relatively small circuit; a flatter circuit like Snetterton can be easier. When you have 13 miles of a circuit with 73 corners along with several blind crests it can take years and years to learn the circuit! That is the fear but also the fun of doing it! When I took my M3 there (as per my thread) I took off one minute from my best time of the day simply by following an instructor! That 'PB' was 1 minute off a very experienced driver, albeit both of us went on very wet days. That is the difference the knowledge can make! Back to the car, it's great to see an AX being rescued! Which TU5 do you plan to put in, or are you going more leftfield?
