interesting ... but I would position "something" discreetly over it if you get a visit from building cu control tossifer , it looks like a jumbo can of worms waiting to be opened there!
(could you guess that i've had a run in with an officious little lady's-piece with a clipboard??) That's why we don't use them at work we use the independents who want to work with you and get the job done correctly and realistically and turn up when they say they will

That's really nice. I'd have to put a pump on the top and make it work again. Might be a problem in the middle of the utility room though. Is it still getting water off the roof or is it just full of ground water that's soaked in?

Nice find ! There must be a way to use it - even if it's just free water for the garden in the summer. It's getting water from somewhere, if you don't have a high water table it might still be feeding from the gutters which would be ideal. Do you have space for a hot-tub / jaccuzzi in your new extension - "pure local mineral spa water" (please check it's not a septic tank before deciding! ) I *really* like the idea of a fishing gnome, you can have own "hook a duck" pond - hours of fun for kids of all ages ( use magnetic ducks so it's not impossible to get a catch, strap random bottles/cans of booze to the ducks as "adult only" prizes) A hand pump would look great inside or outside, a Belfast sink would match nicely A huge water feature is another option As suggested, I'd be tempted to re-bury it at least until the inspection visits are finished. < boring/sensible thoughts> best ask somebody who knows about these things to have a look at it before you start digging foundations or building near it, in case you loose the gnome pond and your new extension

James its no longer hooked up to the gutters as i think might have used it as a big water butt as intended if i had to guess i would say its actually keeping the water table out. about 20 feet away there is also this, its still marked with a W on current ordnance survey maps and is shown right the way back to 1866! the picture is from when we had heavy rain in jan 2014 and it sank down dramatically from that clean mossy line on the bricks. kind of cool to see the original flint lining. i have personally driven an 8 foot stake into the well and shows nothing but chalk on the end so think it has been filled with spoil, or maybe collapsed and then filled with spoil
