Belongs to a friend , currently located in East Grinstead, Sussex. The plan was to drive it to France and get it motd there, then drive it to Holland (he lives out there) and possibly sell it there. This is an ex French Fire brigade 4x4 van. 68,000Kms on the clock. It has a diesel engine, not sure what one, probably 2.5 ? It is French registered and does have documentation I'm told. Just wondering what it would be worth (with an MOT) in UK or in Holland. Body is pretty solid but has had some rot to the sills, which have just been repaired (welding cost six hundred) would make a cool camper / expedition vehicle. I have absolutely no idea if this is a £1000 van or a £4000 van. I am out of my depths.

This has actually been used as a camper and has table etc. Engine is turbocharged. Drove it today. Pulls well. I can't seem to get the 4x4 working though, the light doesn't come on on the dash etc.

I have absolutely no idea if this is a £1000 van or a £4000 van. I am out of my depths. It's a difficult one! It's certainly not a common vehicle on the second-hand market but that isn't necessarily a good thing as it probably signals unreliable mechanicals / corrosion-prone bodywork. I'm assuming mercedeslimos is on the money with early 90's? I can only go by badge engineered equivalents. Negatives; It looks quite scruffy & unloved, 4WD may not be functional & it's lhd. Positives; Very low miles for a diesel of this age, rarity, roof height lends itself to camper conversion, 4WD? With a UK MOT as is I'd guesstimate £1K-£1½K. If the 4WD was working this would add an extra dimension and perhaps £500-£1K to the value. I'm guessing it would be worth more on the continent than in the UK due to the lhd but I'm not sure how he'd fare driving it from Sussex to Holland with it having no test certificate in any of the countries it was passing through.

probably signals unreliable mechanicals / corrosion-prone bodywork. I think most of these vans have died off for corrosion, early PSA mechanicals are generally pretty good. A lot of campers based on these still exist and still command decent amounts. Same for Dangel conversions, they are usually very rugged. Check out the 4x4 505 wagon! datman - if there's anything you can do to get the 4wd system working it would be well worth it. As an expedition vehicle/adventure camper this would be a great starting point. Or a Moto-x dayvan. Not sure where to advertise though... I drove a LWB 2wd Talbot express to the very bottom of Spain, via the entire west coast of Europe in the height of summer and it was faultless if not a little slow (2.5 NA Diesel)

I guess it would be possible to upgrade running gear, suspension & wheels to improve off-road ability somewhat but would the end result be worth it? It would be like putting a whale-tail on a Reliant Robin.

A french fire service vehicle would have to tackle forest roads and far more rugged terrain than a muddy field. It looks comparable to a transit county or sprinter 4wd, both of which are fairly capable off road. Nowhere near a unimog, granted, but how often would you need their off road ability as a camper? Here's a camper conversion of a newer Ducato, by Dangel. www.dangel.com/fr/d%C3%A9couvrez-les-performances-du-fiat-ducato-4x4-dangel-expedition

You did use the term expedition camper, that suggests something a little more rugged and capable to me, something that goes on beyond forest tracks. Perhaps we're on a different page as a lot of guys I know are into extreme off-roading and wouldn't bother to engage 4WD for anything that van's doing. And, Yes, as you say it's not all about clearance; experience, technique and additional kit count for a lot as well. I've got a pretty tough byway near me which regularly beats novices in top-end Land Rovers or Range Rovers but I've seen guys in s1 Landy's or sub-£1K Suzuki Jimny's negotiating it because the drivers know their off-roading onions. This is the sort of thing that comes to mind when I think of 'expedition camper';

I've no idea on price, but as a good salesman friend once told me, if you are selling something, and you've got somebody in front of you - you can bring your price down, but not up. If your friend wants to sell it as an off-road camper This is the place Expedition Portal

You can MOT it on a chassis number AFAIK. Would certainly help with the sale. A company to transport it abroad is about €500 or so. Dangels are very sought after apparently in the Peugeot circles so I’m reckoning a couple of grand at least. Maybe bang it on autoscout24.nl ?

I really like this. It's rare, ugly, probably unreliable and impossible to get parts for. Where do I sign? I need to stop looking at this...

Here's a France-wide search for "Dangel J5", seems the cheapest is €2000 right up to €12000. leboncoin

Are you sure that the 4x4 doesn't work? I have a friend who had his transfer box stripped to find out why the diff lock wasn't working, because the bulb in the tell-tale had blown... moglite's suggestion to bung it on Expedition Portal is a good one, that's the place if you wanted to sell this kind of van over here. My guess would be that you'll get more for it in France though, even if it's just because of the hassle of registering it etc. If as you mentioned you could drive it to France and get it MOT'd there, you'd be selling it in a road-ready state, with all the paperwork and bureaucracy dealt with. I reckon a bit of T-Cut would go a long way towards making it look a lot less tatty too. Bar couple of scratches/dents and the miscoloured patches it seems pretty straight and could be tidy with a little work.

He reckons it may be just a vacuum pipe stopping the 4x4 engaging. He said it went before and he changed it and that fixed it last time.
