I ran a K&N cone filter on my mini for years, they give better top end but sacrifice bottom end and increase noise. After finally getting sick of the noise I swapped back to the original air box last year with a K&N inside, it’s noticeably smoother from a standing start, perfect for town driving, it’s quieter inside and using the original air box again means I can get cold air straight to it! Without deviating too much the lack of low end may have been down to a lack of a stub stack. Even the factory stub stacks like the one below make a difference. If that engine Masters video proved anything it was that by controlling AND smoothing the flow of air, that is what will yield the least loss if not an increase. But it's nothing new but it is nice to see something more conclusive: Below are the stock stub stacks for the MGB:

I couldn’t believe how much smoother it was with the air box back on though.
