Your work Chris on this is simply stunning. The level of skill, patience and care that you have put into this project is unbelievable, you just don't see this standard or workmanship enough these days. How you then manage to find time to scribe in detail and photograph the journey is beyond me.

You and Tony BMW on here have really raised the bar with outstanding quality of bodywork repairs and refinishing.

So here is the said postcard has promised - no update last night has I needed to have further discussions with the paint suppliers - so despite my best efforts I still have some issues with the paint - to explain I need to give you a quick idea of the process involved although some of you reading this will have a full understanding already - so you apply the paint in layers - with 2 pack it goes on fairly quickly depending upon temperatures - a mist coat and 2 full coats - the paint comes out of the same batch / tin and is well mixed - you need to be accurate with your paint ratios and mixing regime and may have to alter this slightly to account for the current climate conditions - curing the paint with a slow activator / hardener in summer - a fast one in winter and a medium one when its neither winter or summer - all dependant upon your own workshop conditions - larger bodyshops with heated spraybooths can alter the temperatures accordingly to suit - smaller outfits like myself have to do things in a slightly different way - put all of that aside forget about the curing bit for a sec - what is supposed to happen is that each coat that is sprayed adheres to the one underneath and forms a film / thickness of paint which should be uniform throughout (at least on solid colours) - therefore when you come to flat & polish to remove any minor imperfections / dust spec / orange peel within the paint you should just have a uniform colour depth - only I haven't and there are a few lightish colours within the colour spectrum where the paint layers separate (mainly light blues / greens along with light reds) - In my quest to ensure I get a sound / solid & presentable paint finish has resulted in finding that the paint layers are separating it would appear has one coat dries darker than the next or is a slightly different shade - In order that you can view this I have purposely over polished an area in order to exaggerate the problem (but at least you can get a flavour of what I am talking about) If you look closely to centre of the pic you will see a haze edge of a halo type effect



So how do I go forward from here - pointless painting the shell again with the same paint to find results of the same problem - you also have to take into account paint density has too much paint is not a good thing nor is too little paint - I am also restricted on the availability of paint types too - there is no formula for water based basecoat basically its too old of a colour - there is a formula for solvent based - next problem is that should you apply a solvent based paint over relatively fresh 2 pack finish you stand a good chance of the paints reacting with each other - options are to leave the car for several weeks + then try repainting with a solvent base but there is another option - if I apply a light barrier coat over the current paint then the solvent basecoat can be applied without reaction - once that is dry a clearcoat lacquer can be applied and that should resolve the current issues - confused ? wonder why getting a car repainted is so costly or why some bodyshops go out of business ? - its not just a matter of masking a car up and throwing some paint on it - that's why



So further prep required - then this can be applied in preparation of the solvent basecoat which is on order
