Holy thread resurrection! The Puma served me and the missus for the winter as a surprisingly effective hack - when not being driven by me the OH would take it to the station...there's something to be said for having a bit of a turd that you don't mind somebody opening their door into. MOT expired in June but due to work and other commitments I've only just got around to MOT'ing her - she failed on a jammed rear seat belt and rear axle bushes. "Just a couple of bushes?" says me. "No trouble". Ummmmm...turns out this was a bit of a pig and she wouldn't have got done without hairymel chipping in - first with the polybusehes to replace the FUBAR ones with (still in the axle, so I had the pleasure of dismantling a rear axle, complete with suspension, to get the two fist-sized pieces of rubber I needed. This was only the start. Cue hours of bashing, cutting, drilling, stabbing, poking, and chiselling on both sides... Old bushes lying in bits, new bushes in situ - EVERYONE goes poly for a reason as with a bit of grease they can be persuaded in just fine. Bit of a mess left over. But she's MOT'd!

Headlamps are a weak point on these things - they're like candles. I upgraded to OSRAM Nightbreaker bulbs, which made some difference, but today I set about cleaning up the plastic headlamp units themselves... BEFORE: All hazy... 800/1200/2000 wet and dry... Cut and polish... And sealed... HUGE difference...not bad for about 90 minutes work all in...but it's probably messier than I'd anticipated...(the trick, of course, is to keep the surface lovely and wet throughout) Also did an oil/filter change (5w 30 semi synth seems to be the correct flavour), fitted the front lower ARB I've had in the garage for months (it's just touching on the gearbox side - I'm waiting to see if it knocks and bangs annoyingly, apparently this is a pretty common complaint) Don't think the cabin filter had EVER been changed... The air filter was a bit better... Still got sparkplugs to change, and a fuel filter to replace - but she's finally getting some love!

Great work so far! Never driven a Puma but had a 1.4 Tigra as my first car and loved it. I remember my mates hating to have to get into the back and having their heads pressed against the huge glass rear window

For the headlamps did you use a kit? What did you 'seal' them with?
Only drove a Puma once, a hire car in Dublin, good fun though.

On the hunt for one myself, carry on. Prices have really bottomed out - I can't see them getting cheaper as they're banger money now. 120 bhp, best part of 40 to the gallon, handle like they're on rails - what's not to like?

Cheers! Pretty sure the previous owner would have scrapped it with the clutch gone, or it would've been bangered. But there's too much good car here!

You're quite right. I have my eyes on a couple but the ones I want are just that bit too far. No rush, the right one will come up.

Ummmmm...turns out this was a bit of a pig I did warn you beforehand about what a dreadful job changing the rear bushes was. looking back i should have brought you over a set of oem bushes and a tape recorder (showing my age!!) to record all the new words you invented did you forget to document how YOU fixed the stuck seatbelt? big thumbs up for a fresh mot mate

Quick question - when is it getting slammed? Tis difficult with a Puma...the front is already on lowering springs and the rear has had a coil chopped off already. I'm told they don't take well to having too much more taken off. Coilovers cost more than I paid for the car so this may be where we're staying.
