So with swmbo having purchased the Figaro, she needs rid of the trusty Punto, leaving us with a combined load space smaller than Harry Potters bedroom at the Dursleys. Now, I've been toying with the idea of selling my MX5 so this seems like the perfect opportunity to find something cool. While we don't need a load lugger, the folding seats and larger boot of the Punto has proved invaluable during trips to the local tip or a certain Swedish furniture store, so I would like something with at least that versatility. My basic criteria are: - As fun to drive as the MX5 Not necessarily as point and shoot, but I want it to make me smile when I spank it on B-Roads - Faster than the MX5 The Mazda is the fastest car I've ever owned, which is quite depressing really. adam73bgt and Rafftank have both agreed I need to join the 200+bhp club - Reasonable load space I would like an estate, as they're cool, though anything that is able to carry a reasonable amount of curse word with ease will suffice - less than £3k Really the MX5 sale will be funding this, and I could maybe put a bit more together over and above that to take it up to £3k, but I can't really spend more than that. I have been bouncing from one end of the scale to the other, looking for fully stripped out hot hatches one minute and giant V8 barges the next. I need help. And really I just want an excuse for a cool picture thread, I'll start with cool examples of what I've been thinking about Lets see what you lot can bring to the table (everyone loves pictures)

Do you WANT an estate, or do you feel like you need one? How often is that space going to be used compared to renting a van for an hour or two for £35? You feel like you need something fast, but wouldn't you like something uncompromised by the need to also be a van? Up until last year we lived on the edge of the Highlands in Scotland. We lived five miles from the nearest shop, which you get used to because you buy a chest freezer and always have milk in it, you keep the pantry stocked, you know the drill. We're a family of four and because we lived a good bit above sea level up a farm track we did get proper, proper snow. Like three feet deep snow until you reached the main road which might have been cleared... So we had an L322. And it was brilliant. It was exactly - like, absolutely exactly - what we needed. And on the odd occasion when I was cooking tea and realised I needed some ingredient that we didn't have because I'd been an idiot, it stayed on the drive while I grabbed the keys to my mk5 GTI or my wife's mk1 TT. Don't buy something like a Stagea or V70R because you go to IKEA once a year. You'll regret it every time you see a parking space you'd have thrown a TT or 350Z into without a second thought.

On AutoTrader but a grand over budget. I've always loved how these look...

I'm flat out saying it - vehicles that were designed from the outset to be quick and good handling are almost without exception going to be better than those whose primary purpose was moving four adults and their luggage from A to B with comfort and safety in mind before marketing decided there had to be a 'hot' model.

I often move tat around the place (and further afield), estates and hatches are very practical Beware saloons and convertibles ( I took a larger convertible to RRG. The tent + suitcase filled the small boot, the set of 4 wheels I was delivering had to go on the back seat, the only space for beer was on the front seat. Hitchikers had no chance ) Any small warm hatch will be cheap fun with carry space (small pug / citroen ?), BMW (E36/E30 estate?) is a sensible option for something a bit bigger. Loads of other choices ! I've had good results before by working out what I *don't* want and see what's left

Lots of good stuff here. Before I bought my Lexus I very nearly bought a T5 S60, surprised I didn't remember the V70 for my original post. Very good point about whether it being what I want/need. Guarantee though I'll buy an awesome coupe and I'll need to move a freezer Subaru forester is a reasonable shout, impreza wagons have been suggested but I just don't get on with them. A forester has all the good stuff with none of the stigma. I've seen a couple stageas for sale now, surprisingly cheap some of them

Not sure if you got these over there as an import, but what about a Toyota Caldina ST246. Turbo, AWD (Celica GT-Four running gear) and wagon. Also 260hp...

My responses are pretty standard these days!
Basically: -Renault Clio 182 with change potentially -BMW E46 328i : I preferred this much more to the E36 we had -Ford Mondeo 2.5T : The Volvo that can handle out of the box ; it uses the 5 pot ST engine. -BMW E39 530d ; the common rail stuff would scare me on them however. They are however fast once chipped, albeit smokey!
I get the estate thing. I wanted the old man's Mondeo 2.5T Estate but he was using it. Why? I couldn't fit my bike into my M3. no matter how hard I tried the shoe just didn't fit! If it didn't have mudguards on I probably would have been OK ; it's a road/commuter bike of mine for those wondering. It would have "just" got into the Clio I suspect, and it somehow went into my sister's car (another Mondeo albeit a saloon 2.5) once I took the wheels off.
Estates are pretty easy cars to live with IME just from that point of view. I wanted a new purchase to be an estate but the values were just too strong for my tastes.

We've got a Subaru Impreza wagon as my wife's daily, the WRX version is relatively cheap Or for something a bit bigger, the Legacy estate. I had a 2.5 N/A for a while and it went rather well.

If in the unlikely even I was looking at Subarubarus I would definitely be getting a turbo one I keep finding myself leaning towards the Honda, though I can't decide if I would end up spiralling into a bottomless pit of investment trying to make the engine a proper VTEC asbo machine
