The phrase "advertised elsewhere" just screams "if the auction doesn't reach price I want then I won't sell but i'm too tight to put a reserve on it" makes me think twice about bidding.
That said think I've bought 4 cars of said auction site via auction and never had any hassle. Sheer scale of it now means it's probably a pig to police effectively and the shysters represent a tiny albeit hugely frustrating proportion of transactions.

I've bought one car on eBay, described as excellent runner but ropey bodywork, was a 300 Vectra, I needed wheels. Went to pick it up, it was pretty much mint bar a key mark on the passenger door, and only on 33k. Went well with the seller, and then his mum came out screaming id robbed the guy, if I didn't move move quick shed have people round etc, quite worrying to be fair given I was in a strange part of Liverpool on my own. Put me right off doing it again.

Guess I must be lucky then. I've bought my last four cars and my wife's car on the local equivalent of ebay with no trouble at all. Always cash on collection though. Wouldn't consider paying any other way. That said there are plenty of idiots to be found here too. I used to say that until a few things happened: -I sold a car to a mate but also his friend ; it was a car for them to share. My dad was shattered and just wanted to get home (he took me back home and he was working 10 hour days, . Being as my friend was in the trade as well I had half of the money paid by Bank Transfer, the other half by cash (from his friend). Being a mate of my dad's and mine we figured we'd be OK. I was short changed by a few hundred pounds. The car in question was my Escort RST, so as you can imagine it wasn't a small amount of cash either! I must have recounted the cash portion 3 times! I was lucky in that my friend made up the difference without question. These days I prefer bank transfers for so many reasons: -No chance of getting fake notes -Once the cash has landed in your bank it's there for good. -I hate walking into the banks these days ; it's like their soul purpose is to make your life a misery ; why do you have this much cash, blah blah blah etc. That said, I do not let go of any car unless the funds have cleared. If buying a car I'll generally try to do it in the week when the banks are open for this reason.

Is a common thing to do in the travelling community

When selling on ebay i've always used fixed price adverts or classifieds, cash on collection. Auctions just bring out all the scammers. Makes my blood boil when people sell things then back out of the sale when it doesn't make enough money - eBay has the reserve feature exactly for this reason, they were just trying to be cheap and dodge more fees.
Report them, move on and find another! If they weren't honest enough to sell the car properly, they probably weren't honest enough to list all the things you needed to know about the car before buying!

I specifically asked the question when I was selling a car to a guy in the Irish Rep & was told they have 24hrs to have it removed back to their account. That was Nat West, others may have different protocol, but I doubt it.

I used to do Classifieds on eBay but I had so many timewasters with that method, much like @alaistark 's eBay guide and experience. I know with my Alfa I had almost no interest through eBay, and stupid offers made. With 99p and no reserve along with a good description I haven't failed. That and reserves put me off. As Mr K. said before, the chances are that they want too much. As an example I viewed a Mini 1275GT prior to bidding on it. I bid around £2.8k. His reserve was closer to 4 and had an offer on the table for £3.5k, with the 'buyer' wanting him to fix all of the faults for that. I'm glad I viewed as in my mind it needed a minimum of £300 to get it reliable (this is why he put it up for sale ; it wouldn't start "right", struggled to start when warm and the brakes required telepathy to work), and if those issues are there you are bound to find more, and while it was restored it was not the best resto in areas. My offer was for the car as it was, warts 'n all. Back then £4k got you a very sorted 1275 Mini. Some could say I was a timewaster but OTOH I guess I have spent enough on cars to know what to expect over the years. Anyway, I laid my offer on the table. 2 weeks later he asked if I was interested in buying the car. I would have been if I didn't have another nice car by then ; The Mini was to be a daily runner. That said, any car I do put on a classified listing I look elsewhere. Pistonheads, Car & Classic and Classic Cars for Sale have been my favourites. The latter has been very handy. For those wondering about Ali's guide here it is

That was Nat West, others may have different protocol, but I doubt it. That may have been down to it being a differing country. I know when I used to order Lorry bits all sorts of complications arose from selling stuff abroad. Not bad, but just something to bear in mind .

I won't dwell upon this but you said you sold it to a guy in the ROI... It's something certainly to think about for sure .

I would expect the Capri to be on Ebay again soon. Keep an eye out and you may even get it cheaper

Yes, I did, but the point I'm making is the woman I spoke to at the bank didn't know that. I just said to her 'I'm having money transferred to my account, once it's in, can the sender get it back.' Yes was the answer she gave, for up to 24 hrs

After years of having trouble free dealing on ebay, in the last couple of months ive come up against some complete morons.
Had an item on there at £80 ono. Someone made an offer of £70. I accepted the offer (at which point I get charged for the listing). I emailed him to say 'congratulations, when would you like to collect it?'...............nothing. Tried again. Nothing. And again. Nothing, so ive now contacted ebay about it and have as yet had nothing back from them either to let me know whats what. Another item was bought monday, all items are sent 2nd class recorded and have, as listed, a 3 day possable lead time before I'm able to send them, yet he winged like a total peanut when it didnt arrive on friday, and then left stinking feedback, i beileve it arrived the following monday. Thats not all, if its not the ebayers being backwards, its the postal service being utter plumbs by throwing a 'fragile with care' , FIRST CLASS RECORDED parcel OVER A 6FT GATE, smashing a bucket in the process and damaging the goods inside. Actualy, make that 2 parcels on the same day. (Rant over, not finnished, but over)
The main problem is, there isnt much of a deterrent in people messing you about because when it does happen, there isnt alot they actualy do about it, and when it comes to having to make a claim, youd be better off doing overtime at work to make the money back instead of all the time and faffing about youve got to do. (Ok, rant not over)
In the case of your capri, imo that shouldnt actualy be possable, if youve won an auction surley that item is legaly yours?

I "sold" my recent MOT failure Ford Puma the other day. I got no contact from the winning bidder, so I offered it as a second chance to the next bidder down the line, for the price that they bid! Got no contact from them either. It's back on again fingers crossed for this time!

You've just got to read Pistonpopper's threads for examples of some of the utter Kn*bs that inhabit e-bay
