Sorry,IPad unfriendly forum๐ Here is the photo that I cannot attach to a post with a quote... It's Duck the Great Western Engine We've got a tunnel built by Isambard Brunel on our patch. Weirdly, it's in the centre of that London nowhere near anything that GWR ever ran on, but it was built with Brunel's beloved Broad Gauge in mind which means it's very spacious and a relatively nice place to break down. I know this because I broke down in it for a looooooong time once. Everything blew up. Darkness. No motive power. Eight coaches of increasingly angry human cargo. For a long time. So long the batteries failed and I was handing out snaplights to the trapped punters, who'd basically reverted to a feudal Lord of the Flies style tribal society. And as I found out when changing over from one non-connective unit to the other, "spacious" when applied to tunnels simply means more room for rats to scurry about in This is the tunnel portal a few years back when it flooded. Water was so deep if you hit it too fast it flooded in over the cab floor, five feet above ground level. The first guy through that morning had a major problem when his coupler block shorted out in the water and the train thought it was coupled to another one, made like Henry in the Tunnel and refused to move. We asked the council if they wouldn't mind turning the leaking water main off because it had 750-volt juice rails in it which was making it tricky for engineers to fix the problem. They said they couldn't cos then the hospital would have no water supply. Isambard Brunel and God's Wonderful Railway have a lot to answer for Broad Gauge, boooo* *utterly irrelevant view from GTR (God's Terrible Railway) As you were, carry on

It did look like Duck ๐๐ He was mortally offended, when looking at photos as about a 7 year old, I rolled my eyes skyward and told him that wasnโt a proper steam engine, as everybody knows , a proper steam engine has a round boiler....๐๐

Anyway. Moving on. The Vtwin came with an uncertain past. V8Ian had bought it from a guy who had dropped the bike. He had said it hadn't run on its side without oil pressure, and seized. There should be a tilt switch in the wiring harness to stop this happening, but more about that when we get there. It might come across as pessimistic, but it's always stood me in good stead. Always expect the worse, that way ,whatever happens, you won't be disappointed. So bearing that in mind, that's where I started. Good look at the engine before doing anything did show up a couple of things. Oil filter all mangled in. Possibly post accident damage. Good news is it's rusty, not oily,so no oil lost ๐ Decided to turn the engine over by hand, not on the starter in case there was anything inside the engine that shouldn't be in there. Decided to pull the plugs out to make it easier to turn See the sparkplug down there? Nope, neither do I ๐ค Possibly Ian had the same idea as me about turning over the engine by hand first, and he removed the plugs? Anyway, not there now,so need to sort a couple. Opened the throttle body's and peered in. No Hedgehog hibernating in the back one Cannot say the same about the front There is something in there that shouldn't be. Cannot quite make it out. Could it be that Ariana Arachnid has set up a daycare centre for baby spiderets? Further investigation needed. Not about to stick my middle finger in there to find out, lest she mistakes it for another appendage belonging to Peter File, the kiddy fiddler, and decides to sink her fangs into it...

Seeing there were no solid bits in the front throttle body,I decided to carry on. Worst possible scenario? Smooth Spider jam. Not chunky. Had thought about using the front sprocket nut to turn the engine over, but seeing the sprocket is awol,it's not a good idea. And why not you ask? If I turn that shaft that I am tightening the nut,I would be turning the engine backwards. Not a good idea,as the slack in the timing chain goes to the other side and the tensioner gets rid off it. Learnt that the hard way as a teenager when the timing chain snapped about an hour after I had adjusted the points. Yep,you guessed it,I had turned the engine backwards.. Moving on,a quick look in the exhaust ports show no hedgehogs, but does show a broken stud. Shouldn't be a problem to get it out with the right tools. Found a plug on the clutch cover, which was duly undone Revealing a 17mm nut that I can turn the engine over with ๐ Poured some oil down the plug holes and left it for the night.....

Curiosity got the better of me. I want to know what that off white fuzzy stuff is in the front cylinder's inlet port. So I pulled the throttle bodies off... Some dirty little fecker's had a bath in me ports and not cleaned away the tide mark ๐ก More evidence of water.... Rear cylinder looks dry But,having not turned it,it has taken one of my worries away. Both valves were closed. So it looks like I have been lucky being unlucky again ๐ Put the socket back on the nut and it turns smooth and free ๐ Oil coming out the exhaust port is clean,no sign of murky rustyness in the oil So that done I went and got supplies Filter changed Old filter full of good clean oil. Another good sign that this engine should be ok. So,whilst I don't advise storing engines outside under a cover,it looks like this time I got away with it. Time will tell....๐

I'd have a look in the alternator cover too. Suzukis of an age were proper sods for shattering their magnets when dropped. Probably don't want lots of brittle swarf trundling round the oilways

One thing that's been very noticeable from the start,is this engine doesn't rest easy on the ground, unlike the BMW engine. Eveytime you look at it,it's conjuring up a new direction to go aars about titover. Doesnt instill a lot of confidence, working on a workmate with the engine Hoist still attached for when, not if. So,quick little brace needed Glue it together Quick lick of paint Engine now in solitary confinement and cannot make a dash for it Mechanically that's about it. Need to sort out the gearchange as it's not present and engine is still in gear . Then it's on to this lot Second lot of wiring to decifer on a vehicle that isn't even built yet....

Engine now in solitary confinement and cannot make a dash for it Why does this pic make me think the engine is singing "if your happy and you know - clap you hands" inside itself

I have often wondered what train drivers do all day apart from staring out a window. I never knew the magnitude of their talents,or that they are actually all closet motorcyclists who sit and doodle on a pad in front of them,with a full box of crayons. Sneaky,very sneaky. Because when the Fat controller bloke,(or blokette) walks in and does the rail equivalent of,"Allo,allo ,allo,what's all this then?" ,they can confidently say,"Things rather quiet in the office today,just memorising the tube layout". But I know better. I have outed their deepest,darkest secret.... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . They moonlight by drawing wiring diagrams...๐ Think this could be a long journey.......

Just having a think as to what else I may have for the engine, I MAY have the downpipes too, can't check for a couple of weeks for obvious reasons, but I'll be released today, assuming the boss can navigate through the her 3 foot of snow, which looks to me about 1/2" to me.......

Just remember,at the moment she IS the boss. If she says that there's 3ft of snow, there's 3ft of snow...woman measurements are different to blokes. To a woman,3ft is between 1/2" and 9/16" when measured on a snow scale... She is the one who will look after you the next couple of weeks or neglect you,so let her be boss. It's a lot less painful ๐๐๐

Working our that wiring diagram is a piece of peace compared to navigating Clapham to Vic or bluffing your way through Selhurst depot. Or Hornesy, Old Oak or any other depot with a layout like the ramblings of a drunk spider yet still run by good luck and 150-year outdated principles for that matter It's obvious you need to connect the doobrie-firkin to the reciprocating wangledangle. Pink wire.
