Looking forward to this laser welding malarkey! Me too๐ Me three! Especially if it is anything like @johnnybravo previous work. It will be soo much nicer to see pictures and hopefully videos of it in action. There are several videos on YouTube of laser welding, but nothing I've seen so far on this kind of scale

Got the mountings done for the ballnuts Made the stepper motor mounting brackets Getting there Stripped down so I can drill the mounting holes for the brackets. Do like a turret type milling machine for jobs like this. Very versatile... Long series 1,5mm carbide endmills turned up late yesterday afternoon ,so I can mill the keyways into the motor shafts today. If all goes to plan,I should be finished mechanically with this today . Fingers crossed ๐

Must be sooo satisfying to be able to first dream up these items, draw them if necessary and subsequently being able to actually produce them by yourself as well, having the (not always) instant gratification of a job well done!
I do a lot of work, but most of it doesn't provide a reward in the short term, which often makes it tougher to keep going on. A drawback of my line of work.

I am very fortunate to be able to do what I do, for the people I do it for. Not always sunshine and light though. Things do go wrong occasionally. Screen on the Turret mill decided to pack in yesterday. ยฃ1000 sees a new one delivered Monday, but seeing I havenโt had a salary for the last three months,it couldnโt have come at a worse time...Hey ho, the joys of being self employed ๐. Seriously need to get the gearbox finished ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ

Screen turned up yesterday,so will replace that this morning. Finished machining everything for the positioner. Modified the stepper motor mounts to get a bit of clearance on the belts Then machined a new set of ramparts for my castle Errr...actually not. Scale in photos can be deceptive. Finger for scale Thatโs a 1,5mm carbide endmill on a 4mm shank. Keyway cut into 8mm stepper motor shaft was 2mmx18mm and the โRampartsโ were the corresponding keys before being cut off

Last thing needed for the laser welder positioner was an enclosure to keep all the electronic gubbins, well, err, enclosed. Raided the useful one day cupboard and liberated this An aluminium box left over from R/C helicopterdays. Found a load of small stainless steel cap screws and nuts as well, so will use them, along with other random tat, connectors, etc Drew up the front panel and cut it out a bit of 6mm polycarbonate Another good guess. Fits like a glove Most of the gubbins attached to box or front panel. Just need to wire it all up....

Got the old cnc mill sorted...eventually ๐ The offending part The old Cathode Ray Tube removed. Can see how burnt in the home screen is,from thousands of hours being left on Now the new screen is LCD. Itโs manufactured in Germany specifically for this make and model controller. The comprehensive instructions are in German and English. All the stickers on the part and the box are in German. The PCB has German on it. No sign of any Chinglish or anything that might prove it was made anywhere else but Germany. The mounting studs in the casing are M5. The holes they go through, with big washers supplied are 12mm. Do you think it should fit without modifications needed ?๐ณ๐ก Thatโs a no then. German precision Engineering 2019... Total pi$$take with a ยฃ1050 price tag. Modification time then... All fitted and working after checking opening the holes out wouldnโt void the warranty. Typical idiot response that my machine must be different. (Seeing itโs a standard machine ,no modifications, as supplied by South West industries in 1995,with their standard controller,itโs highly unlikely they made a special die cast aluminium box with custom bolt pattern just for mine ๐.) . Nothing wrong with their part I was told. Was very tempted to tell him to stick his Bratwurst up his Auspuff along with his LCD screen.... Anyway. It works

It's like physics at school. I've never made use of it, but enjoyed learning it. Long may these threads keep us learning.

Very nice, fits like a glove. Have you made provision for getting air in (or out) of the case ? Or is one fan sucking and the other blowing ?

Great stuff as always. Box looks like something from James Bond, except he doesn't usually have the luxury of an emergency stop button!

The usb connectors are only for initial setup of the stepper drives. They will be removed once set up and the holes will allow air in. Both fans sucking hot air out.

Needed something that it doesnโt get scratched,so old t shirt it was .
Wore that t shirt to my ex place of employment. Really pi$$ed them off. Guess they didnโt like the questionable knowledge bit. Truth hurts...๐๐๐
