Damn that's a huge monster of a thing! Great work Mr B, people for a very long time to come will be looking at your work... that is one hell of a legacy!!
Can I ask what's the squares on the front for?, it looks like concrete

What looks right is not necessarily right, but what looks wrong is definitely not right!

Itβs a legacy to Nick and Phil Rutherford who rebuilt it. I did all the easy bits making new or repairing damaged parts. They did all the hard work πππ»
The squares that you see are a coating called Zimmerit. It was a coating that was applied to late WW2 German tanks to stop magnetic anti tank mines being stuck to the armour plating. The irony isnβt lost on me ,in that Germany was the only nation that had magnetic anti tank mines π€£π€£π€£

This has been a fascinating thread to read, many thanks for all your posts with their insights into materials, processes and results. So good to see that we still have outstanding engineers.

As long as COVID doesn't kick off again we're looking at heading up to Cairns at the end of the month. This undoubtedly means I'll be heading to the military museum. Anything you'd like me to take some snaps of whilst I'm there?

Started making some gears for an air raid siren. Wouldnβt think I turned the blank on Monday, would you ? π€£π€£. Artificial aging process works quite well,as they donβt want in looking new. Going to experiment a bit more on it first before finish turning the blank and sending it away for gearcutting.

and sending it away for gearcutting. Who do you use? If it's not a rude question? It can be a rude question π€£π€£ Generally I use R and N Engineering. Trevor knows his stuff, he makes all the bevelgears for Quaife. This time, however, a friend of mine Pete will do them on his gear hobber. He destroys things as a day job, and cuts gears as a hobby in the evenings. This is about as big as his Mikron can handle diameter wise. π
