This is whats been causing the hold up. Having had some advice on what socket to get, and where to get it (A/F tools having gotten pretty rare these days!) Paul and I could do a little more strip down The input shaft is a known problem on abused trannies but this one seems to have survived my abuse of it OK. rear (direct) drum and shaft assemblies also checked out when stripped. this is the front drum, this baby had run dry and the clutch packs were toasted. Also notice the scoring due to band slippage, the bands are pretty much fubar too. At least the sprag is in good shape no bother, all the plannet gears were good, even the little support bearing chappies looked almost like new. I've left it with Paul pending parts arriving.

I think I've got an AF socket/wrench set........D'oh! Didn't realise it's hard to come by that stuff! Anyway, glad to see it's coming along Will be nice to see it going again! What's the plan with the box back in - anything else need doing straight away or just going to smoke about in it?

it needed to be a deep type socket and a bihex pattern. Needed to be special ordered but no big deal. I can really recommend Cromwell Tools for that. Top guys and friendly service too.
Box is going back together with a mild valvebody / shift improver kit, possibly a B&M vacuum actuator, decent external fluid cooler (rather than using the rad)
I've started painting the bottom of the Olds as it was surface rusting and I've seen how these things go from a bit of surface rust to fuggin great holes in no time before.
Its kinda tempting to attend to the bopdy and paint woirk while its off the road. If only so when I take it for the MOT to get it back on the road I don't have to put up with the incessant moaning about how all my cars look like complete curse word from my tester...
But it would be easier to get it painted properly once its on the road again and I can take it ot a proper booth to do it rather than trying to shuffle round it at home.

Hat off to anyone brave enough to delve into an autobox for a rebuilt! As usual, top work.
