The fuel and supply of parts did it for me so I got rid. Seeing yours and the stuff your doing with all the 80's vibes gets me hankering for another.
Must say the pre face lift cars look so much better.

The fuel and supply of parts did it for me so I got rid. Seeing yours and the stuff your doing with all the 80's vibes gets me hankering for another. Must say the pre face lift cars look so much better. Parts are in fine supply provided you've planned ahead and ordered it all, only takes a few days from the 'states where you can buy pretty much anything for these. But off the shelf in a hurry is a pain I agree, but then I have 2 cars so it's not the end of the world. I'd not want a face lifted one, not only do they look a bit odd, all the hard styled edges being rounded off, they suffer with immobiliser problems and also, that interior. Yuck. The first gen XJ is typically American 80's interior which is actually nice, the later ones look like they just emptied a Chrysler Neon into it.

Looks great, Rich! I wish I had time to work on mine but it is more of a workhorse than a cruiser, mainly hauling around timber and plasterboard for the house project. I'm sure the diesel is a ticking timebomb but for now it keeps trucking along. I love the daylighters but I was impressed with the performance of the LED light. Mine has two big rectangular lights on the bull bar and four on the roofrack. To be honest, though, when you switch them on you can hardly see the difference on the road!

That sounds like a decent MPG figure - I have a '97 TJ with the 4.0L, and rarely get over 20 MPG unless I'm doing a long run.
Love the new lights!

Love the way the dog's going, "All clear left." A place I used to refuel my RR on LPG was a garage that converted. With the Jeep, they reckoned it was tuned about right when they could stand a pound coin on the rocker box.

With the Jeep, they reckoned it was tuned about right when they could stand a pound coin on the rocker box. I should try that later. I don't think mine is far off, it's pretty smooth. Pulled some tree stumps out today with it, put it in low 4wd and let it creep forward with the tiniest of throttle and it pulled them out like they weren't even in the ground. The first one came out so easily I thought the strop had fallen off the stump 😄

Let's have an update of sorts. Seeing as it's been forever. Here it is doing things at Christmas. Used it as a tree hauler and also pulled a chap's transit out of the mud at the tree farm. Because you would, wouldn't you, flex your 4X4 muscles.. Now, because of the suspension lift, the rear prop suffers a little. It's a slip-yoke design and it pulls too far out of the gearbox at extreme angles. the front is a double-cardon joint so that's fine. The options are to fit an SLE (£££££), get a longer prop (Also ££££), get a special conversion kit that uses a front prop from a TD model (Somewhat ££), or fit transmission crossmember droppers, which are about 37p. Seeing as I am not actually going to Moab and wheelin' hard I opted to drop the trans-crossmember and see if it helped with my speed-shimmy and odd resonance noise that occurred intermittently coming off throttle at motorway speed. Invariably, it did fix that. So that was a win. The biggest issue I found people bleating about (that is an actual issue not internet hear-say IMO) is stressing the exhaust, namely the collector at the manifold, as the system is pretty rigidly hung. I fitted a flexi and a brace before the flexi to take any stress out of the exhaust system. Next, I took off the KC clones. I wasn't 100% sure on them at the time, and as time passed I liked them less and less. I had holes in the bumper, short of either putting rubber bungs in them or welding them up and repainting it (not gonna happen, I want the chrome ones) I thought I'd fit something a bit more OE. Microlines. I will recolour the covers black with a Jeep and AMC logo at some point. Then I had to take all this off.. To get down here to change.. The Compressor bearing and drive plate. Spring finger had snapped (Worst supervillan name ever) and sounded like death. Still, cost £3 for a bearing and £70 for a complete compressor to rob the parts from and refurbish the pulley and drive plate to swap straight over. Then it snowed. Obligatory snow pics. Checked the torque converter bolts were still tight. These have a habit of working lose on these, I have checked them all previously due to them working loose and causing the flexplate to rattle in P or N. Worrying really. In the meantime, a friend of mine who owns one had the dreaded brake piston heat-seize, where the brakes drag on the hotter they get until the pads go on fire. Common issue caused by the caliper pistons being made of a type of phenolic plastic (yes, really) which over time absorbs moisture and brake fluid and they are also easily damaged by techs carelessly fitting brake pads, and this speeds the process, eventually making them swell and stick. He limped the car to a pub car park and by the time I had got there to help the wheel span freely (typical of this fault) so we whipped the caliper off and he limped the last mile home with 3 brakes with me a front-guard. Not ideal but hey. He's since renewed the pads, discs, calipers (with stainless pistons) and hoses so no more brake issues for him. Did some miles.. Drove it about a bit, as you do, for some nice photos.. EDITED: Forgot I managed to snag some stainless tail lamps 'guards' (for want of a better word) Normally not a fan of tat like that but it adds a sprinkle more bling to match to grille so I had to have them. I actually had a black set to go on for when it had the A bar, but I never got round to fitting them. And I've just pulled this beggar out again as it was running slowly. (noticed the A/C was taking a while to cool down) Cleaned and sorted the brushes (they ran off the bottom of the commutator and bottomed out on the armature so weren't really contacting) and have noticed the radiator is weeping again. Never a dull moment That's it for now

Nice jeep you have there, Had to sell my mk1 after doing a ton of welding to it, still regret selling it but I Managed to hang on to the facelift for the last 11 years both 4.0

Having acquired an 'eraser' wheel, or toffee wheel, I stripped the rest of the glue and tosh off the side of the Jeep. Made a nice improvement not having the ribbed strips on the side. Much more simple. I also had had plans to deal with the Ring Microline covers, what with not being very american. Got Father's vinyl cutter running and made up some graphics for the covers. If they all go 'orrible the actual real Baja lamps are very cheap from America so i'll probs just import some. Next on the hit list, was the roof. Erugh. I'd made a previous temporary paint repair of some rust blisters on the drivers side and it all needed badly painting all over. So, err. I did. I admit, there is quite a bit of dust and junk in it, it's hard enough what with it being so high up, I had to let the tyres down as it was to work on, the up side is that at least it will go mostly un-noticed. I'm happy enough with it, so that will do. It's a huge improvement. I think a good clay bar in a few weeks to pull off any dust on the surface will really help anyway. And lastly, are you even retro if you aren't using dead cassette tapes to realign the liftgate? Need to give the lacquer more time to really harden before I can fit everything back up (it's fine but I really don't want to spoil it)

I've still got a hankering for an Epsom green/dark silver lace job though.

So, in the large boxes were things. A replacement grille panel as I made the chrome go weird on the last one with the heat gun removing the bug deflector, some new clear turn signals, some new corner markers, some rear bumper guards, and various service items. Oh, and the chrome bumpers I've been wanting since forever. We finally bit the bullet and ordered 2 sets of front and rears along with black bumper corners from Rock Auto so mine and Ash's Jeeps would go full '80's. And then Rock Auto emailed and said 'no, sorry, we have no front ones' Gah. So I managed to track some new ones down in spain, and I got one shipped from there, and Ash's just got cancelled and was told there was 'an issue with the delivery address'. Grand. By this time, Rock Auto had emailed me and said 'Good news! we have shipped your order! Also! Chrome front bumpers are available again!' GAAAAH. So Ash re-ordered from them, and it unduly turned up. So sorted. Only thing was with using the clear turns is you either have amber side lamps (Which in my mind defeated the object of fitting clears) or white indicators (less than ideal) so we found Classic Car LED's supply a turn/marker bulb in a warm white for side which flashes amber, but also cancels the side function when flashing for clarity, returning to side when the indicator is turned off. So these were purchased, and they are ace. Dead happy with those. Here is a few pics at work, having just waxed it. Haven't had any chance to take any nice pics yet!

Headliner will come out again in the summer and I may have a go at that. Although once the lumps are shaved off (I put it all back in in a rush) then another coat of the pebble paint and it’ll look fine, it really isn’t bad at all. Bar the lumps
