A few years ago I never thought I'd be doing this, but another vote here for the SLK. I bought a facelift 320 SLK for Mrs 'fish because it was a nice spec, in good condition and seemed to be going cheaply on eBay. I'd also drunk wine. Also, I've always been fascinated by the folding hard top, which seemed a great piece of design. The key is to adjust your expectations. Think of it as a sports car to rival a Boxster and it's a disappointment, but think of it as a mini-GT and it's utterly superb. The Reinhold roof modules are a great addition - let you lower or raise the roof off the central locking, or with one touch up to 30mph.

I'll have an MG TF coming up for sale shortly. I like MX-5's and MGF's/TF's in terms of small roadsters that are relatively cheap to buy and run. The MX-5's have their advantages, but as a fun driving tool I've always preferred the mid-engined MGs. S2000s and Z4s are great, I've had an S2000 and several Z4s, but I wouldn't want to buy either of those anywhere near a budget of £3k and the running costs are way higher too. I do have a soft spot for a del sol, however have been warned away from them as heavy, oil leaking cars. Also good condition del sols are getting hard to find I'd agree. IMHO You'd need £5k to get a Z4 worth having and the 2.0 and 2.2is are worth avoiding TBH; They are not all that torquey but have the same if not worse MPG than their larger engined brethren. The S2000s are now very pricey! jimbo200sx is selling his Del Sol if you are interested. I'd say go for an MX-5 however ; they tick most of your boxes are they are cheap to run. adam73bgt 's RX-7 is a great shout and different. It's a good car that one.

I've had a good luck on ebay. They rust... alot They can get a big grotty around the arches but many have had the remedial work done by MB under warranty and the post facelifts don't seem so bad. They don't tend to get rusty around the important structural bits.

I've got a z4 with the 2.2 engine, isn't the best but still 170bhp but is a straigh 6 so does sound good atleast Z3's are a bit more retro. Might be able to get a Porsche boxter project. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222631095415
