I’m another one that had a Mk1 in the 70s as my ride to school bike. Maybe it was something about the geometry of the early ones that made them unstable, but I had a couple of minor offs, and then a massive one. Pushed it to my Auntie’s and never rode it again. Mum and dad bought me a “proper” bike to replace it, a Triumph Traveller. I always hankered for a Raleigh Bomber, which came out shortly after, but they were way too dear for me to stand any chance of getting after the new Triumph. I did eventually get a Bomber a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed doing it up and riding it. Eventually though, I moved somewhere hilly where a bike built for teenagers was just too awkward to enjoy, so succumbed to the pestering of a mate and sold it to him. I have an elderly steel BSA frame now, kitted out minimally, which is nice to ride.

Finally got my beach cruiser, held out for one not a million miles away, turned up in Urmston for 80 quid. An Apollo Retro, which is the exact one I wanted as my old man had one, and when he died I used it as a teenager, but it got weighed in by a garden clearance fella by accident. Trouble is Urmston is close to the in laws, so we've had to stop here for a bit.

I had a yellow Mk1. I adored that bike. There was a kid in one of the Action, Victor etc comics that rode one to all sorts of adventures and I though I was him.... I'd quite like one now but they are silly money here (Ireland) sadly.

I thought they were silly money when I bought mine for 350, I sold it for 500 4 years ago, a bike in the same condition is now selling for 1200 or so.

Trouble is Urmston is close to the in laws, so we've had to stop here for a bit. I hope Mrs Astranaut doesn’t read this!

That's so cool astranaut I've not seen one of those for years. Reminds me of my old one. Like you I also had a near on 200 mile round trip to collect this... An Emmelle Bondi Beach for Mrs Pistonpopper, so now I can ride mine, and I don't have to worry about it being M.I.A. when I come home because she's out on it. Like your Apollo I doubt this has been ridden before, and the tyres, although new and still with the bobbles have cracked and perished... Still, atleast they're not punctured... Yet!

That was in my watch list, was hoping it would stay cheap, then missed it

I bought a mk1 at a boot, from the people that bought it from the seller. They paid 50. I paid 150. Sold it, unrestored 1200. You get lucky sometimes.

When I got home there was a stern message from ebay saying that I'm not allowed to go and see items and buy them before the auction ends, and if I continue to do so I will be banned from ebay!! Well, that should save me a fortune... Until I just start up another account!

Never owned a Raleigh Chopper, but I've got a blue 3 speed Raleigh Bomber in the shed which I got new when I was around 13 years old.

having only just found this thread I'll have to get some photos of my collection but before I talk about mine, I used to work at Halfords in 02-06 as a Saturday job where I'd usually spend most of my time servicing my own bikes are riding the new chopper - it's a nice bike.
My collection:
1990 mivi - the 1st bike I ever owned at 5 years old I won in a magazine competition
1992 (I think) Raleigh Mag 20 which I'd like to do an early 90's bike hauler project car to match it.
2003 Pashley 26mHz dual - not to be confused with the trials bike, this is Reynolds frame that I had modified to have horizontal dropouts not vertical. I built it with new parts at the time so it has a hope C2, Mavic D521 ceramic rims and Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 2 forks (1st edition with the speed sensitive valving) I believe that's not a retro bike in its own right!

Actually had a bit of tinker time today, all of about 20 minutes. So busy in work now that on my one day off I cba. Anyway, last time I went to ride the red mk3, it fell off its stand and the brake lever shattered, so bought a pair of second hand mk3 ones, and got them fitted And then just a bit of oiling and tyre inflation on the childs bike, tidied the tools away and went for a walk

I like the colour combination on that Paul Frank, it looks to be quite a pretty little bike. How does your daughter get along with that mirror? My youngest talked about fitting mirrors to her bike, but I've been trying to talk her out of it. The reason for this is when I was her age I had some mirrors on my Chopper... Umm, maybe ten each side of my handlebars, but the thing is depite the amount of mirrors I really couldn't see anything behind me because the shook about so much. Eventually I took them all off, but that wasn't before coming off the back of the thing while I was pulling a wheelie, and watching all the mirrors smash as my bike hit the ground, and all the bits of broken mirror going all over the pavement.

She had them on her Chopper as I had them on mine, they are fundamentally useless, but she likes her little accessories, so far they've stayed safe as the Paul Frank has a box girder for a stand, instead of the thin twig my mk3 has, so slightest wind, it falls over and my mirrors cop for it she loves it, the coaster brake is a real novelty for her, because now she can do skids, which I've banned for now until I can find some more 24" whitewalls as spares

I had a Raleigh Commando. The unloved Raleigh. It weighed a ton, had enough sharp metal protuberances to easily chop a hole in an arm, leg or any other random body part unfortunate to come into contact with it (especially if you fell off it doing a 'stunt') and guess what ... ... I loved it.

I did a Commando for the daughter, fully restored it, she rode it once, said it didn't feel nice to ride, and she inherited me spare mk3.

I remember a friend of mine had a commando, and we all poked fun at him because he had a girls shopping bike and we all had choppers, and grifters. I always thought his chain guard was cool though, and thought it would be cool on my chopper.

The Commando was just a Raleigh Twenty with some bits on it I think. I remember the day I upgraded to a shiny new Raleigh Burner, now that was a bike.
