Well..... 2 years ago I bought an LS400 unseen, and had it picked up from Newcastle and delivered down here to Bournemouth. I only bought it for one reason......and that was to rip the engine out and put it in my Opel Commodore. It arrived, and I got to see for the first time just how amazing these big ol barges are! I then came up with a plan.... I'd insure the LS (it was already M.O.T'd) and run it around until the M.O.T ran out.....simple! But....that plan all went wrong when, like a lot of people that have owned them, I went and fell in love with the bloody thing! I now treat it like a baby....a flippin big baby at that. It has full black leather interior, full wood pack, gold badges and it has the dynamic handling package (DHP). It's got a lot of get-up-and-go in it for a big car...It's almost 300BHP. The DHP really does help this big ol barge get round corners. It drives floorlessly and the auto box is silky smooth....it's 10 times better than my father in laws Mercedes auto trans. You can hold it in gear...thats when you can really get it moving! I get a lot of admiration for the car where ever I go. This car is now my daily drive....I get roughly 23 mpg round town and I once had 34.5 mpg on a run to Folkstone....not bad for a 4 ltr v8! . I've had a lot of cars over the years (about 78?) and none of them have left such an impression on me as this LS400. Needless to say, I wouldn't think twice about owning another and I would strongly advise you give one a home. I'll just leave these here if I may.....

I think everyone's in agreement, buy an LS, not a a GS
You'd only be disappointed in the cheaper, poorer sibling

I've had the LS400. It was a wonderful barge and got 950km to a tank on a run from Brisbane to Sydney.

Built on the same platform as a Kluger. Same engine as well, but they're FWD based, and not very exciting. Can't even get the tail out if you get heavy with the right foot.

I have seen a mk2 GS on an 05 plate on the bay of e a while back.. Well for the last 2years I've been wafting around in an ls400 & I can't really fault it. In the past I've had a mk1 gs300 sport with 200,000+ on the clock, Only issue I had, was it felt a little cramped not as much headroom I've had a mkiv n/a Toyota Supra no room in it. For friends, family shopping purchased, although I did find the (back seats) !! Ideal for stopping bottles moving. And for the last 8years I've had a Toyota aristo v300 vertex edition To give it it's full title. Regarding Aristo"s Mk1's 3.0Q n/a 3.0v. Twin turbo 4.0 zi-four V8 4wd (a very rare thing) Mk2"s S300 3ltr n/a V300 3ltr twin turbo For me I actually prefer the aristo, now I don't know if that is because I have the black interior & the Ls is coffee & cream.which may make the cabin look/feel bigger. Fuel between the aristo & ls is similar I get 15-18mpg I've had 35mpg on a long run in Ls4 & early 20's in the aristo. The rear sub on the GS/aristo can fail so turn that bass music up & listen, second hand ones have gone from £25 -£55 some breakers won't split from the door speakers.so may cost more. As mentioned the brake booster can fail, used ones are around £250, 2001 facelift models are best to get a replacement from. The same for the rear lights as a nice upgrade if you have an early model 97-2000 Mk2 aristo's have rear steering which is a known weak point, A lock out bar or a full rear subframe swap from a GS will solve that problem. Suspension arms need checking for worn joints. along with brakes for warping Picture ref included for lights without mentioning LEDs

Just to reiterate what others are saying. Given the choice, I'd take the LS all day long. They're just fantastic cars and the build quality is second to none. Even compared to Lexus' later offerings the 430 and 460, the 400 is still the daddy. You can feel the compromises with the later models, interior trim isn't as nice, the way things are engineered are not as thorough.
I would happily own another tomorrow, but I'm just happy to compromise with my Jags as the LS just ain't as pretty!
