Well the car is home, he was a bit disappointed with the condition of it 'in the flesh' but is chuffed to bits with it. It has had a rushed respray at some time but is very solid for a 32 year old Japanese car, more cosmetic than anything else. Everything works and it runs and drives fine (on our private test track of course) ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . Worst bit of the whole thing was I ended up not going to collect it. My son works in the motor trade and got a good deal from the guy who moves their cars about, he was invited to go with him and three would have been a crowd so I went to work instead. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) . It arrived in style in a £20k covered trailer pulled by a new Range Rover. He was glad he went and although it was a long tiring day he said the port was like a car show. His AE 86 was parked next to a BMW E28 M5 that had just been imported along with every Japanese performance car under the sun. I am taking it for an MOT test tomorrow, the MOT man is very forgiving so hopefully we will get a pass so the registration process can begin.

Well it passed the MOT test, our friendly tester said it is like a new car underneath.
There was a bit of confusion at first with it having no number plates, I made a call to the DVLA who were very chilled out and helpful (much to my surprise). They spoke to the tester and explained how to enter the details into his computer, easy.
The journey to the MOT station is only about half a mile but it was bouncing down with rain, the car was steaming up and I was really stressed after having a bad journey home. The half a mile felt like ten.
Insurance was cheap on a classic policy (no theft cover yet until it has a decent alarm fitted), so there are just forms to fill in now and once the paper work is processed it will be on the road.

Well that must be a record, nothing but good things to say about the DVLA.
He sent his documents off last Saturday to get the AE86 registered hoping upon hope that they would be back in time for a trip to attend a show in Ireland in September.
WOW! A week and a day later a V5 arrives from Swansea.

I've done it once with my camper from USA. Someone had been in it and switched the cooker light on which flattened the battery. One wheel trim, temporary Perspex window, a roll of foil and a couple of other bits missing upon arrival. Jump started it then it ran out of fuel! I'm glad I did it once but I wouldn't do it again. With my Skyline from Japan, I had Penguin Shipping deliver it to Surrey for £150. I would definitely do this again!

Not surprised the car was good underneath, that's one of the benefits of a Japanese import.

As said above this doesn't effect taking your imported car to an MOT but for those curious about driving foreign registered vehicles as a UK resident on UK roads: Source: Gov Import Car SiteDriving with a foreign registration numberUK residents aren’t allowed to use non-UK registered vehicles on UK roads. The only exceptions are if you: - work in another European Union (EU) member state and use an EU-registered company car temporarily in the UK
- lease an EU-registered car and use this temporarily in the UK
You can usually use a vehicle displaying non-UK number plates, and not have to tax or register it in the UK, if: - you’re visiting the UK and don’t plan to live here
- you only use the vehicle up to 6 months in a 12-month period (1 single visit, or several shorter visits adding up to a 6-month period)
- the vehicle is registered and taxed in its home country
If you're stopped by the police: If your car has non-UK number plates and you’re stopped by police, you must show you can use the vehicle in the UK without taxing and registering it here. You may have to show proof of the length of time you’ve been in the UK (eg a ferry ticket) or evidence that you and the vehicle are eligible for customs relief. I'm not really sure where you'd stand if you owned a house in the UK and France and had cars registered to both. The internet is awash with rumours and the whole things a bit of a grey area. In the real world providing you didn't drive like a bell and had insurance I doubt the police would bat an eye lid. You'll have cut'n'pasted your quotes from a Third Party site, as the Gov page regarding Imports doesn't say the "UK residents are not allowed to use a non-UK registered vehicle..." on it any more. They changed the rules in 2009, now you are just supposed to register the vehicle in the UK as soon as possible, and most definitely not after 6 months if you become a UK citizen. The main issue with a Japanese import is that it will arrive without number plates, therefore will look pretty suspicious on the road.
