Since Photobucket has shafted half of the internet and left many threads empty of images, I thought it might be an idea to discuss ways of minimising the damage and hopefully saving build threads, how-to threads and other useful, image-reliant resources.
Manually going through and editing each image link with a re-hosted one will be a laborious task which, let's face it, not many of us will be inclined to do. So, are there any tools, programs, etc which can make the task of rehosting images easier?
I found a Firefox add-on which automatically rehosts your image to your new (better) host and gives you the new url on your clipboard to paste in its place:
addons.mozilla.org/en-Gb/firefox/addon/rehost-image/
I believe this will still work even though the images are replaced by the P'bucket ransom note, as the URL still points to the image in your account.
You'll need to run Firefox browser obv, but there may be an extension for Chrome too, I haven't checked.
I haven't tried this add-on so can't vouch for how easy it is to use. I was looking for a magic "automatic image rehosting bot" that I could just point at my build threads and let it rehost everything like magic, but I don't think anything like it exists (yet?!)
In my head (and this is a total non-computer programmer's head) it should be possible to create a bot which you can feed the text of a thread you want editing, it seeks out all of the Photobucket image URLs and it re-hosts and then replaces the URL. Kind of like what the Firefox extension above does, but the right-clicking is automated. Am I being dumb and grossly over-simplifying things (probably)? I see people making bots on Reddit, for example, all the time which do some fairly clever stuff. Feel free to shoot me down in flames here...
Any other ideas or tips which will help us save our build threads would be great!
