I am currently the custodian of this MX-5. The car belongs to a friend who has moved to work in Sweden back in March 2016. I have since been baby-sitting the little Mazda, keeping the mechanics oiled and body cleaned and polished. Over the last 12 month I have used the car to commute to work from time to time, racking up just over a 1000 km (600miles), without any issues.
My friend bought the car back in 2012. Timing and auxiliary belts and water pump were replaced shortly after that along with the full service. Having owned an MX-5 in the past I helped him doing the work. The car has since had the oil changed every years, last one being in 2016.
Following on from that, my friend has done several upgrades to the whole vehicle including the installation of a mini supercharger, with the view of turning the car into a track toy.
Key features/upgrades are:
Engine (currently producing 200Bhp 240Nm at 6PSI):
- M45 Eaton Supercharger
- TR Lane kit
- fast 5 intercooler kit
- RX8 injectors
- Magnecor Leads
- Wide band lambda
- de-cat pipe
- Megasquirt ECU. Tuned by Blink motorsport
- Kravs reduction pulley
- New radiator in 2015 (the old one was damaged on the top hose flange while working on the engine).
- Lightweight flywheel and competition clutch
Chassis:
- MK2 Sport Big brake kit,
- Recent EBC yellow pads all around,
- braided brakes hoses
- Frame rails and underbody bracing
- Koni yellow adjustable coil over,
- Polybush super-pro complete front suspension,
- Light weight Wheels from MK2
- Limited slip differential
- Fast road track geometry setting
- 4 matching Toyo T1Rs (part worn)
Body:
- Colour coded Hard Top
- Half roll cage
- door bars and harness bar from TR-lane
- 4-Point harness driver side
- Alu washer botle from Fast 5
The car is not for the faint hearted, and needs to be treated with respect, especially in the wet. It is quick, the chassis is very stiff and the whine for the supercharger is deafening to say the least due to direct admission into the S/C. One the other ends it will scare the pedestrians and wild life away.
Judging by the lists above, lots of time and money has been thrown at the car.
Being a former MX-5 owner and enthusiast, I can say that the shell on this car is very solid, with no rust to report around the sills or wheearches. The car does not appear to have ever been welded, which is becoming a rare sight on the UK roads.
The car does have a few imperfections:
- A few small dents and scratches around the body (~20 years old car)
- The os front wing was scuffed before my friend got the car. This never bothered him.
- The stitches at the bottom of the rear screen on the soft top have started to perished. This be this can be stitched up manually (I did it on my old one). The rest of the vinyl roof is immaculate.
- The alloys had been badly painted in the past (again never bothered my friend) and 2 centree caps are missing
- One of the door has a tiny bit of rust on trailing edge, probably due to an old paint damage.
The car comes with most of the parts should you wish to delete the supercharger (why you would, I don’t know), and the V5C is still under my friend name but the car is registered at my residential address. I have written authority from the owner to sign off the V5.
Had I not been in the process of downsize the fleet, I would have snapped this of him.
I am sure I have left out a few details so I might revisit this later on. I will also add some decent pictures when I get home. In the meantime, here are a few shots from my phone.
Nick.
