Silverlake near Southampton are pretty good – it’s sort of the best of both worlds between new and old
There’s a big compound at the back where hundreds of cars are stacked on proper racking. You can’t get to these however all stock is listed and if you need something specific I think they’ll bring it to the front yard for you.
The front yard is open and you can walk around and pull off what you need. All the vehicles are organised by Japanese, German, French etc. They are all depolluted, wheels off and propped up off the ground, which is proper hardstanding throughout with enough space between to do what you need to do.
As much as I used to like climbing stacks of cars piled up on oil soaked marsh, I have to admit this way is much better from a pure utility point of view.

other than a decent bottle of red , is there much better entertainment that a good scrapyard rummage?! spent about 4 hours picking at orchards today....and all for a total of ten of her majesties finest pounds. well £9.93 as i found 7p. bargain. the stars were aligned for sure as i needed some bits for swmbo's A4 cabby... couldnt believe my eyes when there was one at the head of the yard. picked most of what i needed. theres a lot to be said for spares availability as these are getting to that certain age! still a shame to see someones ex pride and joy in a yard.  unusually there was some interesting stuff amongst the ranks of peugeots and vw/audi's that seemed to make up the majority of the stock today. armored car of some sort behind the fence.  very sorry looking beetle.    lancia that obviously hasnt seen the road for a looooong time as there is no record on dvla website.     205 diesel...   and a knackered elgrand.  |

Addymans in knarsbrough is pretty good. Small and family run but if you ring them they will bring the car up you want and can take off whatever you need. Reasonable prices too.  They get a couple of classics in but most stuff is fairly modern. |

Back over at orchards again. Nothing old or interesting today but i struck gold with another A4 cab in the yard. Pair of straight , genuine (i think) and rust free front wings (usually unobtanium) and an alarm sensor module....all in , a nice round tenner (again)!!!   |

Is Kenny Wilson’s old yard still running in Branthwaite near Cockermouth? The hours I have spent in there....
The ‘new’ owner (Trevor iirc) kept up the rallying tradition and used to campaign a V8 Capri on the single venue rallies around the North.

J Jones Motor Spares, Caen Hill, Nr Devizes, Wiltshire. SN10 1RD Never been inside, but have dropped off a scrap car. Looked a big yard, but no idea if you walk around. TBH didnt seem particularly good to deal with, but YMMV. So updating my own post, went in to Jones’ the other week. REALLY helpful and nice to deal with. Absolutely no problem with wandering around to find cars and remove bits. Got stock of retro stuff, think the oldest I saw was an L reg 205, and they had a couple of Mk1 Clios, and lots of Asian stuff I didn’t immediately recognise. Throughly recommend. |
