Sorry about this as I'm sure it's been answered but can't find it.
My MX5 is currently SORN and the MOT is due on the 15th, if I book an MOT can I drive to the MOT with it untaxed. Don't really want to pay out for tax and then have it fail on me. Although I could tax it run it (assuming I get it all back together and running that is) for 10 days or so then MOT it, if it fails out it back on SORN and refund the tax.
Not that it really matters but the MOT station is only about 1/2 mile away.
Thanks, Mark

Personally I would take it to the MOT as long as it is insured with out a care in the world. However if spotted by a tax camera car then be prepared to have to tax it straight away.
But that's just me, and no advice is given.

It doesn't have to be taxed to be driven to a prebooked MOT normally.

all you need is insurance and a roadworthy vehicle, i.e not dangerous, bald tyres jagged edges lights out etc.
and a pre-booked MOT.

You can't taxa car without an mot anyway so a moot point.

Just don't get caught. Here in New Zealand we need the equivalent of mot to get taxed anyway so it is legal to drive to the testing facility or to / from a place of repair without it.

Run it in for the MOT, so long as it's prebooked and you have adequate insurance cover. Why tax it if you are not using it yet? Keep it on SORN until a new month begins.

Sorry, not being a nob, just struggling to understand the question or what the choice is? There's no point in taxing until you can use it. Tax is the last thing on the list... Unless you wanna keep it on the public highway of course...

You can't tax it without an MoT. the rules exempt you for getting a vehicle for a PRE BOOKED MoT, but it must be insured to do so. Can stil be done for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, but an MoT doesn't automatically make it roadworthy either.......

Thats true ^ lol! My Volksrod has an MOT. The chassis is in a different room to the body, the engine and gearbox are on the floor and the body is missing several key components and the loom is removed from the car. Still has tax, MOT and insurance!

Unless you wanna keep it on the public highway of course... The point was if I had got it working last weekend I could have taxed it and used it for 10 days before the MOT ran out (and it possibly fails). But moot point now as it's not worth taxing for 5 days use, in fact even if it passes might as well wait until June to tax it as you can only buy tax in whole months. Anyway my question has been answered, yes you can drive an un-taxed car to a pre-booked MOT test as long as it's roadworthy.

If it has an MOT it should be taxed. The exception for driving it to an MOT is only there because you can't tax a car without MOT but if you car has one you can't use that excuse imo. Who knows what the actual law would say but I know it would be a might hassle if caught.

Who knows what the actual law would say but I know it would be a might hassle if caught. If you are caught driving an untaxed car that isn't being driven to or from an MOT the law would say you can collect the car from the local impound when you have paid the impound costs and taxed it (or paid the bond) £100 if reclaimed within 24 hours, £200 after 24hours plus £22 a day storage and the release bond if you haven't taxed it is £160 which you can get back if you tax within 14 days.

I didn't tax it, booked a MOT stated that it wasn't taxed and asked was that OK (they knew the MOT expired next week), was assured that as it was pre-booked everything was OK. Now I know that just because a garage said it was OK doesn't mean a thing but at least I could use it as an excuse if stopped.
Anyway it passed (just) I didn't get stopped on the short journey there and back and will now tax it (well maybe not until next month, I won't run the risk of using it untaxed though).

Dude. It's absolutely categorically completely fine and legal to drive it to a pre-booked MOT without tax provided you have insurance Anyway, great news on the pass! Big advisory list?

Anyway, great news on the pass! Big advisory list? See my build thread, 1 advisory rust in sill that will need to be fixed before next year (typical MX5 issue). Tester is sympathetic, handbrake on drivers side not really effective, but I've just changed all the brakes so hopefully a bedding-in/adjustment issue. He didn't even mention the tie-wraps holding the battery down this year :-)
