Here’s what could be the start of a long and glorious thread requiring the assistance of the helpful guys and gals of Retro Rides ;D Although not altogether new to the car scene (I’ve previously dabbled in all manner of marques with shameless brand un loyalty) it wasn’t until RR07 that all those dreams for a bit of retro made perfect sense. It’s been said elsewhere, but to reiterate – WOW. You all have an obvious great love for your cars and it’s so refreshing to find you all prepared to chat on about your rides with affection regardless of the inevitable time and build “hiccups”. A top selection of metal, hopefully a show that’s going to be around for quite some time and some cheeky track action that starting me on a bit of a head scratch… I’m of the opinion that life’s a series of ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. It has become increasingly apparent that I ‘need’ a beauty in my life. She needs to be an older woman, happy to go on top on the weekends, of average build but firm in the haunches, with a smoking rack but most of all she’s gotta love, and I mean LOVE, getting through rubbers. So some rear wheel drive action is on the cards and I’ve “narrowed” the search. “Narrowed” being the operative word as the search has unearthed my dream girl to be a Fräulein still residing in her homeland. (maybe a separate thread along the lines of – do long distance relationships ever work out?) So it is with light of heart, heady with dreams, empty of pocket and short of clues that I ask if anyone has any previous experience of getting a car across to these here parts? As far as I can tell I’m going to need transport…duh! This is likely to need to be of the trailer variety as in all likelihood the car will be a project, and room for additional storage, as I’m gonna do a bit of plundering and pillaging for parts whilst I’m out there too. So I’m guessing at boxed car trailer? Car transporter with bed? Or entrusting my lady with someone else and getting her containered over? (not overly keen on this one I hasten to add). Really though, if anyone has any experience, however small it may seem, I’d be really appreciative. Ideas about when to go, how to get out there on the cheap (chunnel/ferry/amphibious vehicle/hide in the back of a lorry), companies to hire/rent transport/trailers from, if anyone’s got the requisite transport and wouldn’t mind a funded road trip/some crispy folding for the beer fund and an empty driveway, getting a car back (both across the continent and into Britain) and any additional unseen/unexpected costs and issues that could prevent loves young dream. I’m trying to hold my end up by scouring the net for ideas but as much as the list of options seems limitless, it also presents too much choice and I am hoping that I might get some love from people on here with tales of effortless inorts importation a bnd prob kllem free car asourcing trip ds…sorry, it’s getting hard to type with crossed fingers… Answers please…as they say…on a postcard reply Much ta

Hello charlatan1 and welcome . Glad you enjoyed the show, it was great wasn't it?! I'm still on the come-down. There are a few members on here who live in Germany, who I'm sure will give you some pointers about things in that part of the world. I'm intreagued to find out what car it is now! ;D Is it a secret until you get it back home? Or can you give us a hint or two?! ;D

Definately been a few threads on here regarding importing a car.... I've never done it myself but I know Switz and Germany require you to register the car on export plates
In Germany they must be returned - in Switz they are yours for life but have to be renewed every year (I think)
Anyway - Welcome

Go to ebay.de. Bid, book plane ticket, pack a set of knocked up UK plates, sort out UK insurance based on the chassis number, fly to Germany, hand over fistful of euros, fix UK plates to car, drive back. In the UK car will be unregistered. Can you register the car using the chassis number? Maybe.

Do it the way most of us do...
Buy car on ebay.
Borrow trailer.
Drive to Germany.
Pay up and load up.
Drive home.
Do up car and register.
No numberplates involved, no insurance to pay, no worries " will it make it?"
If you take the tunnel do it at night its cheaper.
Just do it!!

Thanks for the ideas people. I’ll have more chance tonight to get on the quest for these threads. Registration information organized? Tick box No issues with letting the cat outta the bag. The plan is to get my sweaty mitts on a Kadett C 2 door saloon and dropping something large with a red top in the front. It’s pretty apparent that the Germans seem to do quite a nice line in them and they generally seem slightly more substantial than the couple of cheese graters I’ve had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of recently I’m still relatively flexible in terms of plans however, and although I’m looking for power + weight loss = smiles all round I’m still open to ideas and advice out there, especially about any potential snags working on a left hooker over here in the UK. Not a bad idea Charlie, I reckon mobile.de’s already going to be sending me a Christmas card this year I’m guessing the real thread issue is the contingency of how to deal with getting the car back if it isn’t a driver. There’s a couple on there with all the right bits, in the right order but in the wrong shed and so would either require Herculanean build up efforts and a rather intimate relationship with lady luck, or transporting back for a bit of tea drinking, biscuit dunking and head scratching in sunny Bristol. Remember people…all correct answers will go into a hat and first out will win…a mars bar

They're not really allowed here either. Unless you're tugging a Fiat 126, as they create an unbraked trailer in excess of 500kgs or whatever the limit is.
But then if I hitch a trailer to my car, and put another car on that trailer, that is naughty too (trailer too heavy for car then).
Meh.

You see, now I know A frames are a no go...it's all helpful to the cause and being committed to memory ;op
So then...who's Bristol or based there abouts with an available trailer come the front end of September? The Mars Bars were a multipack so payment could be swift and gratifying.

Have a look in the Yella Pages. Trailer hire isn't all that much. Provided you are "commited" and get there and back in the shortest possible time, it could work out quite cheap.

Got it in one ;D Long night getting my organizing head on and sorting times, places and people. After seeing quotes for trailer hire, an outlay of around 500 sheets seems pretty reasonable, especially considering if I can’t keep it I can offer it back up for sale so went the extra step of buying a trailer off of e (bye heck that’s a bargain) bay after narrowly missing out on a ford transit low loader and an ex motorsport box trailer elsewhere. It would be great to keep hold of but trying to find a garage/shed/catacomb for storage of both car and trailer smacks a little of optimism but we soldier on. Is there anyone on here in the Avon area with covered storage available to part/full rent? It’s the limo version we’re looking for and so far German ebay and mobile.de are offering bountiful fruits and now, with only four more days until her in drawers comes back off her hols and tells me to stop with all this nonsense, here's to the spending of some cash Still seeking ideas, opinions and experiences so keep ‘em coming in and I’ll hopefully be able to start a readers rides thread September early doors ;D (already ideas of some rims and a paint job for the trailer to get it into the other mods section…)

totally...
Regardless of common sense (blame the parents), regardless of cost (gonna have to keep her sweet somehow) and regardless of personal safety (stockpiling ginsters for the journey as we speak)
Nah, she's a little raver really and has issued a 'can I come too' nod towards the pod next weekend so can't be all bad.
'little babber does the baltic' stickers already in production
