Does anyone have any recent info about taxing a vehicle that has been parked up since the 90s? The vehicle in question is an older motorbike, original V5 (not V5C) is here in my name (owned by me for lots of years), bought before SORN so has never been SORN'd , etc. I know that DVLA rules change occasionally (and there have been rumours that the way staff do things is not always 100% consitant). It would be nice to know what to expect as I'm looking at using it for the Summer. Links or facts from personal experience would be best, tales from a bloke at the bus-stop/pub are not so reliable joeforamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/10509600_10152571807334669_420488992343864099_n-728x546.jpg

If you have an old style V5 then you can tax at the post office with your MOT and insurance certificate. Been a couple of years since I had a car with an old V5 but not heard its' changed. I would then send the old V5 in to the DVLA for a new one which will let you do it online in future.

I would consider ringing DVLA, you don't have to give them the registration number just run the situation passed them

Old style V5 or a new one? Last time I did one at the post office and they sent the old log book off for replacement. Or you could send the old V5 to Swansea for replacement in advance - enclose a covering letter if you want to retain the old one for history purposes.

The cutoff date here is, I believe 1998, anything that changed hands after that is on the computer. But there are still records cos when I bought my Sprint (last taxed in 1995) and without a V5 at all, I just applied to DVLA for a new one and got it back, without comment or fuss and within a week, I had to declare it SORN too. When I got around to checking it, the name of the previous recorded keeper was not the name of the guy I got it from either!
My money says that, unless it has been officially scrapped (or something similar)in a past life, you should be fine.
I'd go to the Post Office, they seem generally less critical and more consistent than the Wombles on the phones at DVLA!

My brother dug a Gilbern Invader mk3 out of a garage last month that had been there since 86. I printed off a log book application off dvla.gov and he sent it off and kept the old log book. They sent it back as their records showed the chassis no with a B instead of a 3. He spoke to the lady in the dvla and confirmed it was a 3 and she said she'd change it and he'd have a new log book in 2 weeks. Happy days.

You have a 'valid' registration document which matches the vehicle. Take it for MOT then tax it at the post office as previously suggested. Let them send the V5 off to Swansea and if they have any issues let them contact you.
I learnt the hard way by kicking the hornets nest over the phone before applying for a new V5C on one of my cars. Simplest is best.

Thanks for the info everyone In no paricular order : ax : noted, thanks dodgerover : it's the old V5 (not the new red one) s1105117 : will do, but not yet Maybe swap for the tale behind your username carledo : sounds promising All others : the info is much appreciated I should have mentioned, the bike is pre-1960 so is mot exempt It sounds like the quickest/easist option is just insure it, take old V5 and insurance to the poist office and see what happens Will let you know (sometime next week if things go according to plan - they normally don't! )

s1105117 : will do, but not yet Maybe swap for the tale behind your username Ha! I wondered if anybody thought it was wierd! 😀 not very 'car-ish' is it? Basically its down to my browser of choice, which (as i know how to use it, not that tech savvy!) is google chrome. When i joined this mighty forum i was stumped for a username, hadnt drunk enough cider and my imagination had gone fishing, however google chrome remembers login data and assumed i needed my university student number, which is s1105117. So i just clicked that! 😊 I shall await the bike tale in due course with interest! 😊

Even if the bike is exempt from the MOT it wouldn't be a bad idea to get one on the system, just ticks a box on the DVLA's computer. Is it already registered as 'historic' or will you need to change the taxation class?

Is it already registered as 'historic' or will you need to change the taxation class? Good points well made mot's are not needed for anything manufactured pre-1960. my bike was registered March 1960 so it's a safe bet it should be mot exempt, but for now - with no proof - it will need an mot The old-style v5 is fine but it was printed before the "new" tax-exempt / historic rules were thought of, so logbook still says "bike" (pay tax). Next question - how do you change to histoic/tax-exempt these days? (we had a local DVLA office last time I needed to do it ) My to-do list has suddenly grown by an mot and a tax-class discussion with DVLA many thanks folks

They did the Historic change at the post office on my mk1 escort. The first PO I went to did balls it up and the DVLA sent it back asking for a photo copy of the tax disc?? Went to the 2nd PO and old lady said the DVLA don't know what they're doing and that she'll sort it. And she did. I walked out with free tax and never looked back

^ I grinned.. Back when this first came to pass I took my Anglia log book into the post office and asked for a tax disc, lady behind the counter glared at me and held her hand out for the documents, rifled through looking for the money... with no apparent cheque or cash she glared at me over the top of her glasses and held her hand out ... I pointed out that there was a change of taxation class notified and asked her to send the log book off to the DVLA, she harumphed quietly, wrote me a tax disc and poked it back under the window... As far as I am aware this is still the case. The post office seem to be more adept at doing these sort of things, maybe it's because they don't have 'consequences' for getting it wrong, who knows. I think you will need to have a read through this, INF34, changing a vehicles taxation class to 'historic'.

If you want to get it done prior to getting a replacement V5C Get an MOT (just means you wont have another hurdle to jump), take MOT Insurance and V5 to a Post office that issues VED. They will likley take the V5 and pass it on to DVLA Take scan of your V5 ! Otherwise get a replacement V5C prior to doing the roadworthyness stuff. www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/old-vehicles

I had the same with a Matchless I bought.
I had an early 90's V5 and had to send it off with a V62 to get it converted into a V5C and the vehicle put on the computer database.
After this I MoT'd the vehicle and then went through the INF34 scheme to get it changed to historic.
To do this you apply for a tax change (V10) and provide an copy of either the original manufacturers build records or the glasses logbook for the vehicle showing the build date. They then declare the vehicle build date from that.
It took time but did work.

Sorry to say .The reg number may be now on some other mode of transport . DVLA re issue them after a number of years off the road .My relation owns this Douglas Dragon Fly 1949 - 50 He as it back on the road after 56 years but not on original registration plate .He was not very happy about the outcome , but at the end of the day he was not able to retain its old reg plate number You might be lucky so give them a try.

I was hoping I just needed to get insurance then visit the post office. It's just unfortunate that I missed the mot-exempt cutoff by 3 months so I need an MOT before anything else. I'd like it on the road but there are a couple of other things taking priority Sometimes things are so simple, othertimes... Thanks for the info & advice, it's all appreciated!
