New toy!! It's not another project. This is a running driving truck which may need some minor fettling but is useable straight away. Dodge Dakota That looks like a tidy example. You and grizz will be starting a US pickup sub-chapter of Retro Rides next That looks like a tidy example. He has more than his fair share of interesting stuff, including a very nice LPG Dakota iirc. That truck looks really smart. And I love the bed cover. Trust you will tell and share more.

Really pleased you are enjoying the Dodge.
Well done on the seat rebuild, that, in my book is a balzy move and not one I would readily have done, though now you have certainly inspired me, should I end up in that position.
I use my S10 as much as I can (company car during the week) over weekends.
And like you, the radio rarely goes on.
Mine is auto, though I had wanted manual, but have to say….. it is responsive, and with the overdrive gear fitted as a ZQ8 factory special, the drive is just awesome.
Of course they use more fuel than a Micra or Fiesta or Focus, but they are none of the above, and they can carry a load . Simples.
You will find it just keeps growing on you.

I think I would have preferred an auto gearbox. I'm a big fan of manuals, my daily and project are both manual but in the truck it would just make sense. I have my heart set on a C10 one day. V8, bench seat, auto and rusty.

I'm a fairly organised person. I have a typical garage small pieces organiser full of drawers containing some useful parts and some not so useful, it's the orange thing in this picture. It currently holds all my electrical connectors, special nuts and bolts, welding tips and shrouds etc... It's stuck in the corner under a cupboard on the workbench and I felt I needed better access to it. My workbench is quite large and heavy. It was given to my by one of my Mum's neighbours about 20 years ago. There's plenty of space under the worktop for a drawer so I ordered some 600mm runners and cleared out underneath. And using my finest cabinetry skills I knocked this together from some left over timber, OSB board for the base and a handle leftover from the bathroom refit. I kept all the bits and bobs in the drawers from the organiser unit but had a good clearout as I transferred it over. There was plenty of room for lot's of other stuff too. It's now much easier to find parts. I can slide the drawer fully out 600mm rather than dig through a small plastic drawer with my finger. I have been slowly plodding along with the Defender rewire. The main supply from the battery to the starter and alternator is done. The power to and from the key switch and i've started on the lighting circuits and also the ECU supply. I've re-positioned the ECU to allow for the demister ducting and added a switch to the tail gate to warn if it's open. As you can see I labelled everything with blue masking tape. Now waiting on an order of connectors and an electronic flasher unit from Car Builder Solutions.

That drawer's a neat solution instead of having to lean across everything. Tidy wiring install too (I'd hate to have to do that as I'm colour blind! )

As I pulled off the drive in the truck the other day, I heard a squealing metallic sound coming from the front. As it was 5 am, I gingerly drove it to work and then nursed it home again at the end of the day. On my next day off, I jacked it up and removed the front wheel. It seems the brake pad retaining spring had jumped out and was rubbing on the disc. I reseated it and took it for a test drive and the noise has gone! I was worried it was going to need a wheel bearing. In other sad news, Land Rover Owner magazine has announced it's ending. I had been waiting for them to release the dates for this years annual LRO show at Peterborough as it was moving venue due to the East of England show ground being sold to developers. LRO statementIt seems it's no longer financially viable to keep running the magazine.

I knew Neil, the editor, when I lived in London back in the mists of time - I can't imagine anyone more perfect for the job of editor as a Land Rover magazine, he still has the same IIA that he had back then, whereas my old III (KJK 491K) is long gone and, he literally ate, slept and breathed Land Rovers. There were many early frosty morning convoys across the Home Counties to various green lanes and AWDC events - I hope he'll find something as fulfilling for his next job.
It really is a shame.

I've had a week off work this week so decided to give the Disco of dailyness some love. The clutch pedal has had some slop in it ever since I bought it. A new master cylinder didn't sort it so I bought an adjustable push rod. I ignored it for two years as bleeding up the clutch is notoriously difficult on the TD5's. So I took a brave pill and removed the cylinder, swapped out the push rod and unbelievably it bled up really easily the first time!! Next job was to flush the brake fluid through. Definitely overdue and the vacuum bleeder made it really simple. The sagging worn drivers seat got the same treatment as the one in the truck. Foam stuffed into the bolster. I've continued to use the Dakota truck and although it's improved, the front end noise hasn't really fully disappeared so investigations began. Diagnosis Some googling of the bearing number revealed it's commonly used on Ifor Williams trailers and best of all, they're only £20 each! I ordered them on Ebay at 3pm, they were delivered by midday the following day! Fantastic service. All back together and a test drive confirms the noise has gone.

Had a spare gauge hole in the Defender dash so I filled it with a rev counter. I lapped in all 24 valves with coarse and fine grit by hand then cleaned it all AGAIN. New valve stem oil seals, springs and collets refitted. I decided it was probably a good idea to pull the sump off, i'm glad I did. Yuck. Cleaned the sludge out and then whipped off the oil pick up and the lower brace thing and cleaned those too and while I was laying on the floor, I cleaned the oil pump assembly. After all the cleaning, I needed to do something else. Rubbing down and painting seemed the obvious choice. I rubbed down and painted the starter motor. I rubbed down and painted the gearbox cross member. Then I rubbed down, zinc primered and under sealed the chassis rails where the gearbox sits. With the gearbox out I test fitted the DMF and clutch. It seems the DMF is too big and the clutch is for a 5 speed gearbox. Bumhats! More money to be spent.

WOW!! April was my last update. So what have I been doing in that time? well, fear not I have taken pictures and I shall elaborate. I went to The Land Rover Monthly show in Billing. I was too late to buy camping tickets before they sold out so we managed to grab an Air BNB lodge in Billing Aquadrome. Set right on one of the lakes. Much more civilized than sleeping under canvas. A 10 minute walk through the lanes and we arrived at the show! I bought a TD5 radiator and intercooler as i've read they work well with the M57 conversion. I bought 6 brand new injectors from United Diesels for £1200. I dug out the retaining clips which retain the leak pipes and manged to drop 2 of the 6. 1 was found straight away the other was sacrificed to the god of back garden automotive enthusiasts. I believe he normally accepts 10mm sockets. I turned the garage upside down, could not find it so one was duly ordered from Evilbay. The selector adaptor kit I ordered months earlier (was out of stock) arrived so I gave the selector a birthday and cut and modified my transmission adaptor to accept it. It feels great. Very positive and smooth. The original trans tunnel only needed a little surgery to fit. Great success.

Two weekends after the Landy show was Goodwood Festival of Speed.....which got cancelled due to the stormy weather. Two weekends after that, me and my chum journeyed over to Belgium to watch the F1. Weather also ruined that. The MOT for the Dodge truck is running out so I thought I had better see if I could extinguish the engine warning light first. I bought a cheap code reader and plugged it in. Some Googling to confirm which sensor was bank 1 sensor 1 and then a trip to Rockauto.com for a new one. I'd never heard of an evaporative system before. Some chatting to ex car types at work suggested it evacuates the build up of fumes in the fuel tank to stop it pressurizing. If the fuel cap leaks or isn't fitted properly it can illuminate the engine warning light. A new fuel cap seemed to fix the fault. MOT booked for Monday.

The EVAP system is an emissions thingy - it won't (shouldn't) affect driveability but here, in California that's a definite smog fail - don't know about MOT standards though.

I didn't affect the way it drove. I bought a new fuel filler cap, cleared the code and that seems to have solved it. I've been driving it about for a few days, it usually came back on after half an hour of driving but so far so good!
