4wd system is poo and in no way comparable to the sierras or escort cossie Mainly because it's an entirely different set-up and floorpan, for anyone who might be wondering ;D They're really not that bad in my experience (2wd ones, at least) - certainly compared to mk3 Astra GSis. I'm really tempted to get one before they're all chavved to death.... You'll all want one in 15 years time! [Edited as that didn't read how I meant it to sound!]

I'd like to have a go in one, the only real experience of a mk5 i've had was a 1.3LX which was so bad that if I ever see it again i'm going to punch it full in the face. That's experience is no comparison though, the only useful data I can get from owning that mk5 is that the handling was quite poor, compared to the mk3/4. I reckon a powerful one (like the RS2000 in question) with the handling uprated might be quite a capeable car. I've heard that the engines are quite expensive to actaullly modify though. Definately a future classic though, whichever way you look at it. Especially the rarer 4x4 version. I have seen Euro look ones that are actually really nice, damned if I can find one now though.... will go have a look

I reckon a powerful one (like the RS2000 in question) with the handling uprated might be quite a capeable car. Your totally right the bogo LX with CVH engine are curse word and handling is too, usually due to them being unloved, thrash and were build to a stupidly tight budget. The XR3i (130bhp) and RS2000 are great, the RS is more than a match for a similar age Astra GSi in every department. The 105 bhp XR3i is also Okay, but that extra 25bhp in the 130bhp model makes SOOOOOO much difference (trust me)

the only one i can vaguely like is the OTT Cosworth model. and even then i have issues with all the owners claiming they are a "supercar". i once had an argument over this, the reasoning being that if it was in group 20 (which it is) alongside supercars, it must be one. worst logic evAh. cossie owners are by and large tits. except ones on RR of course ;D

I cant really speak for the RS, but I did some miles in one of the very last (1993K, oval front) XR3is, the 105 BHP zetec version, and it was one of the most enjoyable driving experiences I`ve ever had, just felt so well sorted and "right". Miles apart from the competent but unexciting 1.8 LX, despite differences in power being only slight. I can only imagine the RS would be a step up from this, and its got better wheels and bonnet.

How do the more sporting Mk5s drive? I've driven a couple of more mainstream Mk5s and they've both been grim.

Brilliant, that would be my new siggy if lankytims quote wasnt such good defence! Classic I think they must be a bit bigger like all newer cars seem to be. the mk3 fest doesnt seem quite as sharp and chuckable as my mk1's so maybe its like that.

I like the early one, which came out when anything with XR in the name was deemed bad and Ford went all soft with the Si badge instead. I liked it cos it was different and looked pretty tough (compared to a normal Mk5). I think these were out before the Cossie.

Were the RS2000 not mk5a's. With the cosworth facelifted front and same old mk5 rear? I'm lead to believe there were only 500 4x4 RS2k's, and no they aint fast

"Everything we do is driven by you".
I'd forgotten that.
We used to have some reworkings of that slogan
"Everything we do is drivel and poo" being my favourite.
Thats whole fisty gesture thing clinches it for me LOL.
Whats 150 PS in real money? 130 BHP?
So its an Escort (ergo lighter than my Cortina) and it has more power so therefore it must be at least a bit quicker than a Mk3 Cortina 2000GT? Or is my logic false here?
FWIW I don't think my Mk3 Cortina is actually a quick car anyway....

150PS = 147.96BHP
(Multiply PS by 0.9864 to get BHP).
Edit: Apparently 0-60 is 8.1 or 8.3 seconds, 16.4 quarter mile, 133mph top speed. 190Nm makes overtaking easier than in many similar cars.

I thought they were further appart than that. Meh. 150 BHP is way more than a 2.0 Pinto even with an Ashley 4 branch and mild performance system, Kenlowe, Weber and K&N. Even with "ricer adding up"

I've always thought the Zetec Motivated XR3I 130 was proabably a better buy, cheaper and surely Zetec engine is easier to tune? Plus I imagine Zetec engine is lighter which'll improve handling?

definately a 'curates egg' sort of a car.
My bro-in-law has a 2wd one. It's quick, like proper quick, urinates all over my BMW, and scares the curse word outta me. Handling is pretty damn good too.
BUT! By christ can they rot. I think his has had about 3 cracks at the welder whip, to nip stuff in the bud, and it's all in non-obvious places too, like the door pillars and inner wings. Nasty. And the engines seem obscenely fragile, I think his one is on it's third in 4 years or so. Oh, and grenaded coil-packs make one helluva mess. And they 'feel' very cheap. The fit and finish & materials are woeful.
Still, they are v. popular in my parish, with at least 5 or 6 nicely turned out examples knocking about. Not my bag, but probably a good 'future tip'.

Oh, and I'll just mention the thirst too. Jeesus! Bro-in-law did his sums and it is cheaper to buy, insure & fuel a second (diesel) escort for driving 20 miles a day to/from work than it is to run the RS2k. Maybe at this point I'll mention that at "70" *cough* I'll be pulling 45mpg in the BMW. Nice.

Easier to tune - yes. Lighter - a little bit. Mk6 handles better than mk5 regardless of what engine is in it due to revised geometry, there's little to choose between the two. But the RS2000 has torque which the Zetec doesn't. Horses for courses.....

meh, I get 22-23 MPG out of the Cortina. As I recall thats why I sold the last one in favour of a yank. I didn't notice I was spending much more on fuel with the 7 litre Oldsmobile than the Cortina 1.6...
