Hi guys and girls. Hoping someone here might have an idea regarding this. Ive had an issue where the oil filter seal keeps popping out when i start it. Its a paper filter with the screw on cap ive also tried a new filter and seal. Still does it.
Ive checked * no cracks in filter cap * no blockage for drain from filter i used a foot pump and pressure has no.problem moving thru it. *pressure bypass valve in cap moves fine * also checked oil cooler and its not buggered which makes a change for these i.guess.
My thought was possibly pressure from pump is too high. But supposedly they don't have a control valve . Its supposedly just controlled by the oilways....
So now.. totally lost. . No ideas. Anyone have a clue? A wild guess haha. .

Is it breathing heavy when you remove dipstick whilst running ??

Sounds silly but has the housing been cross threaded does it spin on easy or is it tight. If it's slightly cross threaded it will put uneven pressure on the seal

IIRC the seal sits inside the housing and there is a lip on the top to hold it in so it cant push out, there isn't an old seal left in body is there ? and the top isn't screwed in far enough for the seal to sit inside the housing?

Had this happen years ago on an Avenger I was asked to look at. Problem was the oil pressure relief valve has stuck and instead of bleeding excess pressure back into the sump the pressure increased and increased until something blew. In this case the oil filter seal so that could be your problem. Fitting an oil pressure gauge is the only sure way of checking this.

^ same as rbs, I fitted a NOS oil pump onto a Cortina years ago and that blew a couple of oilfiler seals before I found the pressure bypass valve in the new oilpump was stuck. Any chance you have use oil that's too thick, or overfilled it? (not likely but I can't think what else would blow seals) Let us know when you find the answer pls

Thanks for all the replys guys. Well i thought id solved it. Theres two seals on the lid . One O ring that comes with the filter and one that is considered part of the lid.
Well the lid one was very flat. It had become stuck to the lid . So i found a new seal ( local mf had a broken lid in stock i pinched it from) soo for a few weeks its been fine.
Until today and its now leaking again. Same place...
I assume id just bandaged the problem....
Now one problem i have is. 1.7dti engines (Supposedly) don't have relief valves. Its all controlled by the oilways supposedly.
Its doesnt seem to breathe heavy and oil is correct 5w40 just under full on stick and just changed.
And lid definitely not cracked. Ive even de-greased it to properly check.
Not fun when its the daily eh....

Hmm... So sounds like it is a pressure issue... It is the correct filter for that engine, right?

From memory, depending which one of the Y17, Z17,A17 engines you have , they have one or two screw in oil relief valves on the side of the block?

Yep definatly correct filter. Second one actually as i changed it again first time it popped. Bosch type so not a cheap crossland one.
Havnt seen any pressure relief valves anywhere. Its the y17dt iirc? Ex izuzu unit that gm started making themselves.
Its not leaked for last week. Used ptfe tape on threads so gonna try another cap. Ordered a genuine one but didnt arrive.....
