Lovely Escort olduns Lietaer has been driving his Legacy for years, although normally he would have used his (re-bought) Manta 400 in which he won the 1988 Belgian Championship thirthy year ago. Utter legend! But...., just like Spa last year: "it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings"...Both in the Classics and the Modern class, penalties have decided on the winner Lietaer disqualified for not following the track twice at the same spot.... Anyway: cool livery, very nice sound, I dig! _DSC1097 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1103 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr

Slighty more power, equally light rear, "slightly" less affordable. On the last stage of the day I was standing on a long straight, the intakesound of that airboxed S14-engine going through it's gear: "Oooooh yeah" _DSC0976 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC0977 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Lietaer's Subaru again _DSC1008 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr

Aircooled 911's aren't too bad soundwise either... Too bad they aren't allowed to use the cigarette-brands anymore, ... A bit useless as everyone knows what "Gitanse" refers to. In the meantime, shady betting-firms can ofcourse still be the main sponsors in football [end of rant] _DSC1010 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1013 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1014 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1019 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr

The weather was a lot better! Only a couple minutes of rain in the afternoon, almost no wind and some sunshine from time to time. (Altough rain and some cold weather fits a rally in the Ardennes perfectly ) One reason for my mixed feelings was the change in both the stages and the parc fermé. Last year parc fermé was in the cosy center of Spa, this year they relocated to one of the parking lots of the circuit, which just doesn't have the same atmosphere... It's a fantastic circuit, don't get me wrong,...but putting the heart of the rally in a parking lot instead of the center of Spa (which was a lovely place for it) or Francorchamps (which could really, really use some revenues ) doesn't attract the people. Second reason many were moaning about was the decision to ditch some classic stages from the older rallies and replace them by racing on and around the Spa circuit itself. It does make it easier to see more of the action if you're at the right spot...but seeing rallycars from behind a fence standing on a grandstand isn't really the same as getting mud flung at you while you're in some friendly farmers field.... This does make it sound worse than it is btw, and maybe I'm just whining...so sorry for my ramblings and I'll just stick to photos. Just gonna post them chronologically, there will be quite some moderns so you'll have to excuse me for that.

First stage we saw, the showstage at Fays. A short loop every car shoud do 3 times before driving to the finish, so should be good! And a nice view too! _DSC1894 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr And nice cars! _DSC1883 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr The fastest cars were ofcourse starting the earliest, so first all of the R5's _DSC1896 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1920 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1925 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr I was just telling my sister about Cherain (you'll remember him from the crazy jumps last year) and his crash during the Haspengouw. Because his Skoda R5 wasn't repaired in time, he was using a Fiesta R5 as a replacement that day. During his first pass everything was business as usual: fast, aggresive,... "Hmmm, he should have passed for the second time by now already now, no?" Cue the ambulance, tow truck and police speeding of... "Cherain, race over". And with that, the stage was put on hold because it would take some time. Bummer, but most importantly the crew was okay (after a checkup in the hospital). Back to our car, better luck at the next stage! On our exit we walked through the waiting cars: The 911 GT3 of Snijers, utter legend but by that time the 3 other cars in his class were either out of the race fully or restarting the rally after mechanical failures on the first day. No real competition, but he still wows the crowd and tried everything to keep up with the R5's. And that sound, my god _DSC1936 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr The Fiat 124 Abarth, which was no match for the 911, but still a crowd favourite. 1,8 litre with 385hp, and it just looks cool _DSC1937 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Arriving at the next stage, the legendary "La Clémentine" with it's offroad finish after numerous switchbacks. Walking up the stage all of a sudden about 50 people walk towards us...big crash, stage cancelled. On to the next one! In the meantime we heard that the Fays stage was live again, so we could have stayed there and actually seen some cars... Luckily the next stage was only a short walk away (so yes, the new stages did have some advantages ) Not a Classic Impreza, but how often do you see a Scooby STI with the original exhaust? _DSC1939 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr

The next stage included "Le Maquisard", one of the stretches of road I love when driving in the Ardennes and which is also used once a year for an official hillclimb event. This time cars would be driving downhill though. Just in time to see Kris princen fly by, at that time leading the race. As you can see by the mud, he did drive on La Clémentine _DSC1942 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr De Mévius (a family with a long racing history) equally fast and only a bit behind in the overall ranking _DSC1949 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Never the fastest times for this guy, but no problems would see him end up high in the final rankings. Smart driving _DSC1963 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr A real connaisseur of rally cars obviously _DSC1965 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1972 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr _DSC1978 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr So, a bit older metal... _DSC2042 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Now we're talking! The Escort of Draco, with the "Belge"-livery... which is ofcourse referring to the Belga-cars of the bygone era. Lovely _DSC2049 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr What a beauty _DSC2051 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Golf 3 _DSC2085 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr EG Civic with the telltale exhaust note _DSC2113 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr A 400. During the Haspengouw he blew up his E30 M3's engine, so drove his fathers car. Last time I checked, my dad didn't have such cool cars (Nor do I own an M3, but hey ho ) _DSC2118 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Another Escort screamer. _DSC2120 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr Alright, better get moving to the next stage! But first check out the rather lovely E28 _DSC2126 bewerkt by G C, on Flickr
