I am carrying out the exact same conversion at the exact same time as you. I have a 99 T4 2.4, and a 2000 V70 2.5 Tdi. I have the complete Volvo so its probably a little more straightforward for me in some ways.
I am attempting to do a Vlog , as opposed to blog, and the plan is to get the videos up on you tube, but I'm obviously a complete amateur at that sort of thing!
Yeah that would be cool mate. Be interesting to see somebody elses struggle😂😂😂 I really wanted to do the youtube route but I havent got the patience for all the editing and faffing with different camera positions. Also, I don't want to show my ugly mug to the world
So your going down the O2G route for the box eh? Thats interesting, I thought the flanges were completely different and also the gear selector cables as opposed to rods?
You obviously know what your doing! Be interested to see how your getting round that. I'm going to run mine with an O2B, at least initially , I realise I am asking a lot from it but just to get it up and running it seems like the easiest way. I know its not the right way to think of it but O2B boxes are all over the internet for not much cash, I was thinking if it pops , bang another in! With the 5th gear mod, the ratios arent too bad.
Glad your making some progress, I'm at a similar stage to you now.
Nice!! Yeah I figured theres no point spending cash on a decent engine to run it through a naff gearbox. This 02g was only £300
Shifter rods are different slightly but I'm getting them this weekend. I'm pretty sure the NS driveshaft is the same.
Just been browsing ELSAWIN on how to strip and rebuild gearbox. Seems easy enough😂 I'm not going to be chasing mega horsepower. About 180ish will be plenty for me and an 02b would probably cope with that.
Well, .., I have slept on this and I am thinking your way might be the way I have to go.
I don't want to be constantly worried about overloading the gearbox, and it sounds like the O2G might not be so bad to get in.
Do you have any ideas on the linkage? Looking at pictures, like you say , the near side drive has the same looking flange as the O2B , I guess we would need to get hold of a 2.5tdi O/S drive shaft, assuming it would slide in to the existing hub.
I will have a poke around , let you know if I come up with anything!
Just read back through an old thread on the T4 forum. Somebody did state that all 2.4 and 2.5 driveshafts are the same🖒
Not sure about the inner cv joint, but they look the same.
The 02g has a different intermediate shaft which you should be able to get with box. The 02g intermediate shaft has a mounting bearing on it, like the rest, but the bracket that bolts it to the engine block is specific to the 02G.Mine came still bolted on. Too be honest, if you struggle to get this bracket you could probably make something
Ok great, thats helpful information. I did some searching myself and pretty much came to the same conclusion about the driveshafts, why would vw make them different I guess? So they ditched the trumpet and put an intermediate shaft instead, I found one on ebay just to see what they look like and they just push in to the box I think. That bracket might be an issue but like you say, where theres a wheel theres a way!
The trumpet on mine kept leaking anyway so no bad thing to get rid I think.
As always, budget is a big consideration. I am definitely going to go O2G eventually but if I cant pick up a reasonable ish priced box by the time its needed , I will just slap the 02B in just to get it rolling and iron out any issues I may have. Then , when I'm looking to up the power, budget for the O2G conversion.
On a different note, which inlet manifold are you using? And which oil filter and housing set up are you using? It seem like the volvo housing and filter might foul the vw engine mount. I want to keep as much from the volvo as possible because pretty much everything on my 2.4 was tired and worn out.
