Finally looking to shift on my old Audi. It's done me well for many years, and my dad before me but it's now surplus to requirements.
It's the 2.5 straight 5 turbo diesel which is really economical, especially for such a big old barge. The original engine was replaced at 198000 miles by me and a couple of friends with one from a 140k Volvo V70. These are the same engine but spun around 90 degrees, so I used all the Audi ancillaries except for the slightly larger Volvo turbo. It smokes when you give it the beans but it does have some grunt. The only other annoying thing with the engine is that the pushrods for the diesel pump clatters a bit. It did it on both motors so I just live with it. It's now on just under 220k so the motor is on around 160k.
Bodily it's acceptable - not bad but by no means mint. Front wings are in need of repair or replacement, and there are a couple of small scabs just starting on the bottom the rear arches. There is a small scrape on one rear arch and a small dent on the bonnet where it got clipped by a flyaway tent years ago. Paint is a bit flat but it would mop up well.
Inside it's a grey cloth interior which has always seemed prone to water marks so I've always had seat covers on to tidy it up a bit. Electric windows in all four doors, central locking all works, electric tilt and slide sunroof. Big load area in the back -it's had all manner of stuff in it from engines to building supplies and it doesn't grumble at all.
It's got later A6 16" alloys on it, a tow bar (Dad used to tow my race car with it in the early 2000's) and in the last couple of years it's only problems have been a sticking rear caliper (replaced the pair), an alternator not charging (had it rebuilt) and the harmonic balancer cried enough (replaced it and the single use stretch bolt).
Last summer the drivers side coil spring broke off a bit of the top coil - not even enough to lower the car but a mate who is an MOT tester said that it would need changing before the next test, which I think is around May. Use the excuse to put some lowered springs on it - I never got around to it!
I loved driving it but I just don't need it for a 3 mile commute to work!
Photos to follow!
