As a professional horticulturalist, I often deal with small machinery, and luckily I have an interest in it. Although I don't tend to use ride on mowers, or 'lawn tractors', a great deal, I do have an interest in them. Particularly old ones. So, a couple of years ago a mate offered me an old Westwood mower for £50: I have more photos, but can't find them at the moment! It's got a little 6hp Tecumseh engine in. Runs, drives and cuts, but throttle doesn't work properly. I started looking for parts, and then a bigger engine. Although it didn't NEED a bigger engine, well, you know. But I gave up, as a 10hp engine was at least £120. Then a couple of days ago the wife spotted another one on a Facebook selling page. Up for £75, I was driving at the time so asked the wife what number was on the side, she said '11'. "Offer him £60, I'll get it tonight". Supposedly a good runner, but various parts are not attached to the engine. Steering needs putting back together. BUT, it is an 11hp Briggs & Stratton engine. Sorry for the photo quality! I've got to look at the other one to figure out how that all goes together... The plan is to fix the 6hp one, tidy it up, then I'm unsure, I might sell it. The 11hp one will be fixed up, painted Nato green, and used as a yard tug and rough ground mower. I might also make a removable spray tank and boom, so I can use it for pesticide / herbicide application. I've also got an MTD and a Murray, but they are less fun.

I've got some videos of the 6hp one 'in action'. I didn't know I was being filmed from the house. I was ramming through chest high weeds and brambles. There is also a clip of loading it into the van, following Health & Safety protocols.

They are quite good machines, seem to be able to battle through long grass well.
I might consider 'thinning' the 6hp one so I can get it through standard domestic gates.

That could be a good idea, how would you do it though?

I'd have to have a good measure. Would mean cutting the rear arches and welding the lip back on, cutting the rear axle, from memory the ends of the driveshafts have a slot which you fit a tiny bar in to drive the wheels, so possibly cut the end off and cut a slot further down.
Would probably involve cutting the deck, which would mean fitting a slightly smaller blade.
I'd need to figure out a width and then take many measurements of the Westwood!
So it wouldn't be easy, but might turn it into quite a practical little mower.
Obviously I'd keep the 11hp one as a full size machine.

I don't have a lawn at all! Lol
But part of my business is grass cutting. I bought the first Westwood with the idea of using it for overgrown areas, instead of strimming or killing a push mower.
But the 11hp one would be more suitable.
If I can modify the 6hp one to get through gates then it would open up more options.

I've still got to buy a 2-wheel Tractor type Rotavator. I've got a very old and interesting tiller, currently in a pile of old cylinder mowers, all on the rebuilt list. Yes, I have a problem!

I've updated the title as I can see this topic straying slightly! I got a bargain buy last year at a motorbike show, whilst wandering around the bike jumble. An old chainsaw, running, for £20. I've got an old Husqvarna, but I keep yanking the pull cord off. I think it needs a strip down and clean up. So I had been looking out for another one. This was the bike show find, an old Sachs-Dolmar! The only thing is, I don't know what model it is, so if anyone could identify it, then I would appreciate it!

I've got one of these knocking around somewhere too. But never been a fan of rear engined ones. I got given it as payment for helping someone move house, it was a non runner. The plastic gear in the starter motor had jammed, I bought a new gear from France (over the internet), and it started up no problem. However, I forgot about all the weight being at the rear, top gear, high revs, foot off the brake, wheelied it down the garden path, luckily the tow hoop smacked the ground and the fuel tank fell off (I had only trial fitted it), otherwise I would have ended up wrapped round a tree. Come to think of it, a similar thing happened when I used a mate's old Massey tractor...

Yep ! Though shortly after making it ,I pinched the honda engine for a sexy Webb 24"...which also didn't have a grass box ...so i had to another buy one that did, just for the box. The black and gold suffolk is my daily ,still going strong!
