So my insurance is up for renewal soon and as per the renewal from my current company came through and it's sky high. I, like every year, haggled but the cheapest they will do me is £720.
I'm 21 trying to insure a modified 944. Its a struggle.
So they have a sister company, on whose website I decided to do a quote. Lo and behold, the quote reads "total to pay: £550". 'Score' I think. Well I phone up my current insurer who say no problem, we can match this price. Except when I give them the reference number they cant find the quote for £550 so understandably say they cant match it. The blokes advice was to phone the sister company and take their new policy of £550 out since its much cheaper. No bother. All my no claims will easily transfer over etc.
So in between phoning I do ANOTHER quote to make sure it was all kosher and that one comes up slightly cheaper at £548.90. I get on the phone to this sister company and give the woman the reference number. I got the same sort of answer that she couldnt find a quote for £548.90 but the quote was in fact £806.20. I argued the fact and she spoke to the manager and both couldnt find it. More arguing and holding later she comes back and says that both her and her manager HAVE in fact seen the price of £548.90, but when she goes into the quote to accept it, the price bumps to £806.20. She has sent an email to the pricing department to figure out what is happening.
Now, I have screenshots of the quote screen, which tells me to call to complete the payment, as well as emails from them stating my quote is £548.90 with a button to 'buy now'. I'm under the impression that as the quote was advertised at that price, thats the price I should pay. It doesn't mention anything about the price being a guide or the like. It literally says "Here is your quote, your price is: Single card payment of £548.90"
So my question is, where do I stand with this? If the 'pricing department' say that the 550 is wrong, then am I still allowed to argue my case to pay the price quoted? I feel like if that is the advertised amount then they should honour it. I'd love to say screw it and go elsewhere but finding insurance this year has been an absolute nightmare and that is the cheapest quote by far.
Please retroride insurance gurus, help me!

Not going to name and shame who it is as it doesnt really matter and they have actually been rather good to me the last 3 years. Just want to know how to approach this.

Just hold your ground if i was you . Get some names and keep badgering them , phone everyday and ask to speak to the same person , otherwise i can see them just ignoring the problem and hoping you go away instead of actually providing service and sorting out your problem . I have found with any call centre type place that most of them are just interested in passing you on to soemone else so they can chalk up they have delt with another customer , whether they actually sorted your problem or not . One place i was passed around 4 people contiuosly for 20 minutes because none of them wanted to do any work - don't let them fob you off .

There's no law saying they have to give it you but it sounds like a fault at their end rather than a misleading quote.
I bought a 924 at 21 and struggled to get it insured anywhere. The only people who would touch it were Lancaster and I think it was cheaper than my current modern!

Could it be something to do with the variation between online quotes and telephone quotes. I've often had quotes on screen that aren't the same as ringing the company and doing talking to someone.
Annoying when it happens because I prefer to deal with a human being.

Just click the buy it now option in the website? Problem solved surely? Even if you can't afford it in one hit it's worth getting a credit card and paying it off in chunks for a saving that big- insurers instalment plans are generally credit managed by a third party company and charge you interest anyway so it's no different to what they'll do.

I'll see what the verdict is tomorrow and then decide how to take it from there but I can see myself going back and forth. There's no law saying they have to give it you but it sounds like a fault at their end rather than a misleading quote. I bought a 924 at 21 and struggled to get it insured anywhere. The only people who would touch it were Lancaster and I think it was cheaper than my current modern! Tried all the classic insurers like Lancaster but nobody could get me a decent quote. It was no bother last year at 20 because the car wasn't modified but this year its proving more difficult than I thought. Could it be something to do with the variation between online quotes and telephone quotes. I've often had quotes on screen that aren't the same as ringing the company and doing talking to someone. Annoying when it happens because I prefer to deal with a human being. No idea, I much prefer speaking to a human on the phone, but I still go round a few sites to check as you can never tell nowadays. Sometimes its cheaper on the phone, sometimes cheaper online. Tried it, it just tells me to phone to complete the payment. But although the person on the phone sees the quote as 550, when they go in to accept it and put it through the price bumps automatically. I can afford to go for it now, and they could probably run it through as a renewal so i'd only be paying when the insurance starts. Just don't want to be swinging words about without actually knowing if there is any sort of obligation for the insurance company to meet the quoted price etc. I can't see why if they quote me for a price, they cant give me it... but then I have no idea how insurance companies magic up their figures. Otherwise every insurance company could just give you a quote for £100, then when you phone to insure they tell you its actually £900.

Have you tried phoning some of the more specialist brokers rather than relying on online comparisons? I insured my new car last week, cheapest online quote was £320, ended up paying £295 after making some phone calls.

I've found with comparison sites that they'll quote very loosely so it's cheap and jumps to the top of your results, and once you are a bit more thorough it just goes up and up... Hastings are one for this, and they even admitted it on the phone when she gave me a near double quote.

Most of them won't Insure under 25s, but otherwise I've not had a price less than 800 odd. I've never had to pay that much for insurance in my 4 years of driving. I have 4 years ncb. The quote in question was actually done on the insurers own website, and was way cheaper than any comparison site had given!

As far as the SOGA goes a quote is a legally binding offer, an estimate on the other hand is just that.

As far as the SOGA goes a quote is a legally binding offer, an estimate on the other hand is just that. Its not a quote for supplying goods is a quote for providing a service based on varying factors that are subject to change

It's not a quote in that case it's an estimate, a quote is a legally binding unless terms are drastically changed.

Well as an update to this thrilling thread, i'm getting the insurance for £546.20. With both insurers, the clerk on the phone hadn't specified that it was a classic car. Supposedly this is what takes the extra off. The bloke then added 1000 more miles to my estimate and it took another couple of quid off. Thats with an agreed value etc.
So after all that stress, the case is now closed!

Good result & anomaly explained.
For most of my life I've unfortunately found that to keep premiums at their lowest I have to change insurer every year as the previous insurer always feels the need to load the premium when they think they've got you. A lot easier to do today with Insurance Comparison sites. Simples!
