Had an Ash down Big Field but 'Bill' is coming in to do fencing and downed wood is free wood so I needed to stake my claim. So it's bleddy cold and my H&S consultant (SWMBO) makes me dress appropriately and this is before the chainsaw trousers Grommit!  Here's the tree and SWMBO hurrying out of shot  That's enough to indicate my interest  and enough brash for a decent bonfire  However I saved this branch for a late Secret Santa for the kids. Fired up the Fergie and the PTO saw  Giving 10 inch sections of Ash but the Ryobi kept stalling on the 30mm spade drill so out with the big Bosch  I then find out that big spade drill plus powerful drill is a pretty effective fire starter  Ah well out with the chainsaw again and we have some Swedish Torches/Candles for camping fire pit substitutes for eco presents.  Can't finish off with cake tonight so instead have a cake topper of Bob the Dog humping his blanket  |

I got this for SWMBO for Christmas, a friends daughtrer makes models in 'spray clay'. She did this from a quick snap of our dogs (Border Terrier & Cocker Spaniel, Basil & Sybil).  edit to add, it's Foam Clay not spray, very light. |

I'd get that Ash split up pretty quickly - had a mare splitting some 1 year seasoned stuff and it felt a bit wet too. Burns OK but suspect will be better next year after some split drying time.
Firewood, the gift of warmth so many times, felling, logging, stacking, splitting and burning !

The young lady has some talent. She is and only 14, her attention to detail is brilliant. This is the photo I sent her, I was expecting just the dogs but she did the basket as well, even down to the label onthe front. Can't remember if I posted this up from last Christmas but sometimes, just sometimes, a husband gets it completely right. I commissioned this of all her favourite animals.  May I present, left to right Mad-eye Mary, Princess, Bob the Wonder Dog, Sausages & Bacon Mind you , favourite has a wide range of meanings as two of these are currently sojourning in the freezer. What I mean to say, however, is your young artist is on the right track as people will buy anything to do with their animals. I, of course, scored twice as many brownie points with this present for not only did she get misty eyed on opening it but she also realised the earache she gave me for disappearing on a 'spurious' boys day out to collect the present with Uncle Rob was unwarranted. Marital harmony ensued  I'd get that Ash split up pretty quickly - had a mare splitting some 1 year seasoned stuff and it felt a bit wet too. That's brilliant, looks like trophies Bob the Dog should be worried.
There were some misty eyes when she openned the box. Not sure how I'm going to follow it next year, maybe a model of the Discovery. She (the modeller) has done a great VW Camper for somebody.

It's feekin' cold down the Lair so no fine work can be done as I have to wear gloves in the cold. Deffo not such a hero as teaboy . Roll on the summer  I had a contact dropping in mid-morning from Daventry to pick up the MX5 rear subframe and associated bits from the abandoned idea of giving a 2CV rear wheel drive by bolting the MX5 subframe to the 2CV chassis. Then we worked out it would not be stiff enough  . Ho hum so a deal was done and I got this ready for his van or pickup  He turns up in a Seat Ibiza with a big smile and a Tesco carrier bag of tools. I look at him, at the subframe, wheels and parts and the miniscule cabin. He says 'No worries, it'll fit and I've had bigger things than this in it' and so it was. A little light disassembly with my help and it all fitted, guy was obviously a Tetris Grand Master. We had the usual car guys chat and he builds/converts buggies using the diffs changed to chain and other MX5 gubbins with Yamaha R1 engines like this.  While waiting I built the hi-tech mobility stand for the turbine  Checked all the tyres in the workshop. 12 psi does not feel enough for the rear tyres of the Lil' Grey Fergie.  Wheeled out the fuel and start cart and did a few checks. Even more hi-tech as the start cart is Dexion based  Did I wire up the batteries correctly? Yup but both need charging.  Am I going to get a start today? Nope. No helpers available today also I need one final fuel tail. Curse these mixed imperial and metric couplers. At least I have solved the filter problem with the Sytec unit. Blue one too small with gravity fed fuel for testing. Why do I need a filter? Because I have had to chase out every tapped hole on the hydraulics tank I'm temporarily using for fuel and even with vacuum and oily rag tank wipe out I can't be sure that I've got every bit of detritus. Not a fan of stripping the burner down because one of the 6 fuel sprayers is blocked.  Lunch time beckoned and as a special treat SWMBO had raided a cake shop to present me with a New York Deli Bap, Barm, Batch, Buttery, Roll or Rowie (choose your own regional variation). That's Emmenthal, Pastrami, Smoked Ham, Mayo, Mustard, Dill Pickles and Sauerkraut.  Followed up by an inadequately sized piece of Biscoff Rocky Road.  ......... to be continued |

After a yummy and unexpected lunch my special husband spidey senses kicked in. There was a disturbance in the Force, the cosmic balance was out of kilter, the Ying/Yang walla-walla bing bang was not in balance. There must be some marital quid pro quo in the offing after a morning in the workshop and so it came to pass. It seems the horse box store in t'top field needs re-stocking with hay. The hay at the bottom of Big Field where we nearly lost a couple of cars however a dry week of frosts has stabilised the soil structure so let's give it a go. Looks innocuous but see the mighty Mississippi (Frome) river at the bottom of the field. We've had a shedload (special meteorological term) of rain. More of the floods later. See the standing ricks in the lower field.  See the non-standing ricks in the upper field  See the drowned water meadows  Ground was stable enough to get to the bottom ricks and when we uncovered we were astounded to see dead mice all under the tarpaulin.  I must have disposed of 20 mice and the top layer of bales that they'd peed and pooed all over in a vain attempt to escape. A truly joyous job. It seems that there's a bit of fermentation under the tarps and when they come in in the inclement weather they succumb to carbon dioxide poisoning. Poor meeces. Then an afternoon of bale slinging. Yay! |

Maintenance time and the list of jobs is endless. Need to start clearing the sh!t ricks so it was Lil' Grey Fergie time with the forks and a decent pallet. Dry small bales are 30 kilos but wet bales are north of 60 kilos so ooooooh my back.   The plan was to dump them in the reeds at the bottom of Big Field in the reeds where the bales can slowly rot down out of sight. Here is SWMBO coming to see if I'm doing it right,  After shifting 24 bales or half a rick, time was called before I collapsed completely. Rob who was supposed to be helping me in return for tractor driving lessons was still asleep. Bloomin' suburban layabouts! A short rest & re-hydration break was called for.  Next up was clearing sheep damaged fruit tree fencing oop t'Top Field. Sheep can destroy nearly any protection through scratching themselves on the posts and wire netting. Eventually they get through and then ring bark the trees. Luckily they're our landlord's trees and he doesn't care. Typical dead tree and damaged fencing.  After dismantling four sets and fending off disgruntled sheep wanting to know what was happening to their scratching posts I had a pile of semi-rotten wood.  What to do? Have a bonfire of course. This is my idea of a bonfire in a pasture  This is what SWMBO imagined what would happen  I can confide no flaming sheep occurred and SWMBO was sufficiently impressed with me to arrange sundowners in Big Field. Totally worth not setting fire to her sheep   Just as light started fading and it was getting cold Bob the Dog found an unlucky Deer's Foot.  This means we've either got poachers (not likely with our local Field Watch) or the guy who owns the water meadows below Big Field has started culling. Deer feet have tarsal glands that can taint the meat, or so many believe, so the feet are removed when the carcass is gralloched. A fox probably moved the foot but didn't fancy the taste. |
