Right chaps, I'm going to bite the bullet and remove the wheezy 1.4 from my Astra, I'll be getting a 1.6 16v to go in, and was wondering who the best people are to cover mods like an engine change? It's got loads of other mods like the Gsi kit, wheels, exhaust etc but not many seem to cover a replaced engine? It's off the road ATM but want to start thinking about sorting it out now, don't want to finish it to find I can't insure it Thanks

Might be worth trying A Plan don't know if it's really their thing but at least they are helpful and do genuinely try and get you a good deal.

Just buy a 1.6? LOL Or a GSI. Thanks for the helpful comment It's a fair one; a swap to a 1.6 is a lot of money, time and effort with little reward; the insurance will always be higher than a car which was 1.6 from the factory, and the resale value will always be lower. Plus, if you're going to all that effort, my thoughts would be lying with more capacity and perhaps one of those weird spinny wooshy thingies *n

I guess it is a fair one, but I like this particular car, and that particular engine. Not been a fan of the hype of C20XE's and the price they command for a rattly old smoker, nor can I afford a boosted car ATM. Plus my mechanical expertise is limited somewhat. I like a revvy little valver, and that's what it will be.

Its been sat in my garage for many many moons, Will require a rebuild but its just a paper weight for me. + may make your astra something interesting.

I think I remember reading about your Astra, and it's sentimental value that it holds. If holding onto it longer means putting a 1.6 in it then go for it! I put one in my mini and they're a very simple conversion. I also had one in a corsa that I took in as P/X and it was a great little ripper!
I know they're not well respected on here for numerous reasons. But with a brand new licence they insured me in my classic Mini Cooper with a 110% power increase, cage, wheels, pretty much everything selected on the modification list and I payed about £450. So they may be worth a look if you're short of options. Which you don't seem to be.

Graham Sykes seemed quite good and were happier the more mods you had done. Not sure if that was so they could get even more money from you or not but they seemed a bit more friendly than a lot of places I tried. graham-sykes.co.uk/modified-vehicles/

Although I had great service from them, Performance Direct gave me a cheaper quote than Brentacre this year. I can't remember what the difference in cover was but I think it was something silly like £1m less legal cover lol.

Just buy a 1.6? LOL Or a GSI. Thanks for the helpful comment Sorry. Didnt mean to sound twatty. But whats the power, torque and power band gain from 1.4 to 1.6? (I've genuinely no idea?) My missus drives a 1.6 Astra SXi and I find it gutless, lazy and have to grab it by the scruff of the neck and rev it to make it do much. Granted my daily is a petrol VRS with some tweaks and my toy is a batsh!t mental boosted used-to-be-a-Beetle... but even still, it's a bit lacking. It strikes me as some effort for not much engine when there are ones that came like it from factory. Granted I don't know the sentimental value of the car... Are you doing anything with the 1600 going in? Or keeping it stock as rock? I have plans for my VRS in the future when the current 215k engine dies (lurve the car! Even though its a complete battlewagon), it will be traded for another 20vT but I will build it myself with some tricks in the guts.
