Mk2 Golf Gti 16V ground up rebuild - she's home!!

OK. I'll start with the throttle body.
I saw a guide on how to rebuild these on clubgti. Looked fiddley but thought I'll give it a go as mine was filthy anyway.



So. After dismantling it I ended up with this.



Can of worms?

But using the guide AND a spare TB as a reference I carried on. Cleaned the parts in my ultrasonic cleaner. Reassembled which got me this.



But now the main event. An hour ago the bodyshop sent me some pictures.











Very very exited needless to say.

Not felt like this since I was a kid on Christmas eve mate. Been a long time coming. I truly thought the project was dead at one point but its all go now.

Nope scratch that. There was another delay. They've text to say they'll be working on it all weekend though. I've really been feeling the effects of not working on an old car. This manifests itself into looking (more than usual) at other project cars, wondering (more than usual) what the next project will be once this is 'finished'. The suspense!

Just been chatting to the missus counting all the dailys we've had since starting this.

So here they are and what happened to them.

Ranult Megane 1.5 Diesel. Sept '16 - June' 17


Didn't let us down. Bought for £500. However it did have a mounting M.O.T 'to do' list and was on 161,000 miles, the missus wanting something newer.


So what does she do... Well.. goes and buys one of the worst cars we've ever had. An era in Peugeots recent history that reminds me of the kind of history British Leyland had in the late 70s, early 80s.



308 1.4 vvti. 72,000 miles July '17 - Feb' 18, about as aesthetically pleasing as a spat-out-chip. It lasted a whole 7 months before (I suspected the timing chain stretched) but since it was out of its 3 month warranty and the part alone was over £700 I said sod it. I won't say how much she paid for the car. But it was sold for spares/repairs for £300

My turn. £1150 got me a Jaguar Xtype 2.0 diesel 01/18 - 03/18



Which I did like. I had for the grand total of 2 months before it decided to brake down on the busiest round about in town at the busiest time of day.



I ended up chasing my tail to what I can only describe as a delicately sensitive delphi injection system, this is and the 308 saga is also the main reason why there was such a delay in work for the mk2 between Jan '18 - May' 18

The next car is probably my favourite of this bunch, had quite a decent following on PistonHeads.

I went on a lot of good adventures in that van. Detailed in the thread. But it was 188,000 miles when I had to (reluctantly) get rid. It was some unfortunate circumstances that forced me to scrap that car.

Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI 10/18 - 04/19



Bought because it was cheap and local. £380. Which Did well UNTIL someone tried to cut into the car in front of me on a slip road coming out of work, said car f#&ked off anyway. The car in front of me slammed on, it was a 2 year old Renault Captur. My 20 year old Pugs brakes not being as efficient all I could do was swerve and brake. This was the outcome.





I'd never been in a crash before so this was naturally very stressful, thankfully no one was injured. They have dash cam footage of the car that tried to cut in and as far as I'm aware the police are still investigating as I've not heard back from my insurance or anyone else's for that matter.

Which brings us up-to-date. After the 406 I was tired of playing used car roulette so iI did something I said I'd never do. Went and bought a new car via the finance route.



2015 Tiguan 2.0 tdi. I love old cars but if I'm late for work because of a break down it will seriously go against me, so I need something I can trust, with 3rd child now too it had to be safe competent and like most modern cars.. Vanilla

I agree, turn up unannounced. If they send you your final invoice and its more than you were expecting, they will likely say its all the extra labour. If you ask for a cost-breakdown, they'll make up their timesheets. If you go unannounced and it hasn't progressed and doesn't look like anyone is working on it, you know in your head any extra labour is bullpoo.
