I've had a couple of SWB 912s.
Both were project cars and both wore me down.
The first had terminal rust in the rear suspension. I had enough with the rust I could see and the guy I sold it to (for I feel the fair and princely sum of $2.5k) worked at the parts counter at my local Porsche dealer. He found even more rust and sold it for slightly more 'for parts'. It now resides in a hanger full of them here in MN.
My second one was from So Cal and was 'rust free'. That obviously means they didn't show me the rust and I didn't have to pay for that either. This again was just as the Porsche bubble was really taking off. It had a 914 engine in it, but the car was generally fixable.
I enjoyed the fact that a lot of the panels you can get, and they are pretty good quality too, but wow are they expensive!
It got to the point that it eventually wore me down and I also got annoyed with people telling me stupid things like I was buying the wrong year sun visors and I should get the originals recovered. The visors I bought were for a SWB but not the right ones for my car spec...
Needless to say, it was sold to the same guy, and now lives in his restoration hanger here in MN awaiting its 'professional' return (with correct sun visors no doubt).
Used parts are astronomical (but unlike beetle parts, replacement parts tend to be bought by quality rather than price somare typically pretty good.)
I'm not sure if I should admit this but, having got my second one to drivable state, I wasn't that blown away with it either. A LWB should be better though.
When I sold mine, it was out of my garage within 5hrs of having the advert up, fighting off people afterwards who wanted to pay me more if it hadn't been picked up yet - so you probably won't lose on it (as long as it's not a shed that you partially restore).
I'm not sure I have the early shape car out of my system yet, but next time it would have to be a different route for me.
I have to admit they do look blooming gorgeous!
