Yup, as I said earlier, the DOC (Drive Other Cars) extension has been dropped. AFAIK it has always been the case that the car has to be insured. Dez is quite right ; always check the wording of the insurance policy and never assume. After all, the insurance cos. will assume nothing should a payout be involved. richr without trying to come across too twatty I don't believe many TV shows. Alot of the time they will misquote things to sensationalise the programs. But yup, I've seen questionable things before on TV . The DOC extension is still available with some policies, mine included. As far as I remember the other car has always had to belong to someone else, although it didn't used to stipulate that the car needed to be insured elsewhere. When my renewal came through it had changed to say that the other car had to be insured. That's what I was meant to say . Mine also has it and it is one reason I went with the policy.

I totally agree with your take on TV programs You just expect traffic officers to know their stuff, don't you

You even expect motoring journalists to know their stuff!
I remember a now very prominent TV presenter talking about the E36 BMW 323i. A nerdy thing to pick over I admit but it went something like this:
"The BMW 323i. With its 2.3 litre engine..."
All of them were 2.5s in the E36s FFS!
I almost laughed at what Sytner BMW told my mate about CAT C or Ds:
"What that means is they've been damaged very badly and should never be returned onto the road." Are people paid to talk bollcks or does it come naturally?

Telepathic policeman ? Yet to meet one!! No different from borrowing a mates car. Police check the car is insured, police check you are insured on a car with third party extension. All good. On your way. Not the best way to go about things but it gets the car home. Suppose it depends how far you have to travel etc. The Police would know exactly who the car was registered to before they even pulled you over, so when when your details don't match they would then make further enquiries. So you try and blagg them, say its your mates car you have borrowed - might work if you live in the same city. Well it might work until they contact the registered keeper to check if you have permission to drive it (ie its not TWOC). Is they guy going to lie to the coppers no. Or what if you have a crash, smash up a 100k car, leave someone with serious injurys and your driving unisured - all to save £50. Sorry for the rant but your giving out proper curse word information.
