if the replacement engine is the same M52 type just swap your loom onto it no? Annoyingly, no. Engine in the car is very late type with the crankcase sensor at the rear of the engine, new S/H engine is earlier with the sensor at the front, 2 months of making a loom, wasted! However, the early engine does have a loom, still clipped to the engine, so only a few wires to alter. I'm going to contact the vendor about this, I was promised a late engine and they is some damage to the front of the crankshaft housing, won't know if it'll leak till run the engine..... I'm just going to swap the engine and see what happens....

i wasnt suggesting that the rad was blocked, just mentioned that bmws seem to need big radiators. do you have a pic of how it is plumbed in? or a scribbly diagram? No, the rad could've been blocked, just 'cos it's new, don't mean...Anyway, apart from a few differences in location, it's the same as this. www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CB82-EUR-12-1995-E36-BMW-323i&diagId=11_6077 (sorry, can't get the link to work, not having a good weekend really!) Apart from these minor changes, the header tank is larger and higher up, the throttle body has been bypassed, the rad is larger and alloy. But, it has the top inlet on the same side as the outlet, above it. The rad also has a 8mm bleed pipe that plumbs back into the top of the header tank. May fit a standard plastic rad when I fit the new engine, just to check that the alloy rad isn't the problem. The cooling fan can bring the temp from over 100c down to 80c very quickly, but that doesn't stop the engine behaving as if it's boiling, lots of gurgling and spitting water out of the cap, which is a 7lb one, don't want to use anything stronger, not sure if the 45 year old Triumph heater could cope!

the 7 psi cap may be a large part of it.
standard bmw cap is 2 bar, water boils at 110 degrees under half a bar, 135 at 2 bar.

Unfortunately, I'm getting all the symptom's of a boiling engine, but at 80c! The 7lbs cap wasn't a issue on the previous engine, the one that overheated in Paris because the cooling fan hadn't been wired correctly. It still vomits water if the cap is off, if it wasn't pressurizing, this wouldn't happen. It would just evaporate as steam as it boiled? Andy
