Probably the dullest question to be asked this year, but..... I get welding gas via my brother in law who has a business and BOC account, he has around 8 bottles on hire from them, so when I need a refill I swap mine out for a minty fresh one and some beer tokens change hands under the counter 😀 He told me today that BOC now scan their bottles, and an unidentifiable one will generate a fine and rental, however the bottle I have was last exchanged around a year ago. It's a big bottle, and lasts me that long unless I have a huge weldathon. (Which generally would involve a Land Rover 😅) Has anyone had any experience of this?

Yeah, he's correct.
They know what bottles they gave you, if you give different bottles back, it'll cause trouble. We once accidentally got the bottles from two accounts mixed up at the yard, and they knew straight away the bottle returned belong to a different account.

But what if the bottle was booked on that account, but it's been in my garage. It did come from brother in law, as part of account, so in theory they should know that's it's on the system, but just not as regular as the other bottle turnarounds? It could have easily have been kept in one of his site vans for a year, which would be the same?

Can't see any problem with this, as long as it goes back under the same account

The whole welding gas thing sounds like a legal racket to me, it's the reason I have never tried my welder lol.

That's what I thought, I suppose it comes down to whether BOC give each bottle a 'shelf life' or 'return by' date? I can't be the only user that a bottle lasts a year, surely?

I use my welder a lot, but it's mainly bodging exhausts and fixing bits. The bottle is way too big, but it's what the brother in law has, so that's what I get. Going back 10 years or so it was a dodgy bottle, but that got swapped out in the good old days so I should be part of the system.

I've had some of mine over a year - no problem although I've swapped now to a place that doesn't charge rental as it's a rip off

Slightly different then. I guess count up number of bottles, count up number of rents paid, if there's a disparity expect to get charged.

I wouldn't expect the bottle to have dropped off their system after a year, can't see a problem at all. That said, it's BOC, expect them to try it on.

Although this has reminded me they did 'loose' a barcoded bottle off my account and never asked for it back. I got My yearly rental renewals through and it went from 4 to 3 for no reason. It was easier to just never return it than try to explain why I was returning a bottle they thought I'd never had.
And the tales of their other f-k ups I've had to deal with could fill a while forum not just a thread....

Due to illness I hadn't needed to get a refill of BOC gas for my welder in around 3 years. The annual rental was getting too high so I cancelled the contract and returned the bottle. It was scanned but nothing was said about it being an old bottle. I've now got a rental free bottle from SGS.

Rental free bottles FTW, I had a BOC account for many years but they put the prices up once or twice a year, EVERY year and I seem to use less and less gas. When I returned my last bottle to them just too late to avoid being charged another years rental, all I got was a credit note, 2 years now and the so-and-so's still owe me £96! I'm just glad I emptied the bottle (by opening the tap) before giving it back.

Back in the 60s my dad bought a set of bottles from BOC to save rental charges. Yes, that was actually a thing back then. However, over the years they have made it more difficult to swap them without having a BOC account.
We used a couple of firms over time to swap them but they eventually all pulled the plug on the deal as they were getting charged extra rental on bottles they didn't have on premises.
We now use Energas as they're pretty much the lowest rental deal we could find

You'll be fine as long as the bottle goes back under the same contract. We have Nitrogen and Oxygen from BOC at work and we don't use much so often lasts over 12 months without any issues. The only limit these days is the bottles have to be pressure tested every so often but that's far longer than 12 months, 4 or 5 years I think.

I don't do much welding these days so it took about 5 years to get through my last bottle from BOC but it was never mentioned when I took it back. It was nice to have the welder on hand for the odd small job but the rent was a killer so I ditched BOC and now have a rent-free bottle.

Steve The cylinders are vacuumed when they go back to the depot, they can't afford to top up potentially contaminated cylinder and send it out to a hospital or other critical use customer

I wasn't worried about that, just didn't want to give the tea leaves back any gas i'd paid through the nose for!
