Where the hell has it gone? I've just lost the diff in the Astra on a busy main road, I'm stood trying to push it uphill on my own with hazards on, to a chorus of horns, shouting and a small crowd of people, the only person who came to help was a slip of girl but bLess her between us we got it in a parking space.
Am I one of the only people now who will help someone on the road who's blatantly struggling or pull over to see if someone needs a hand?

I think it depends. Most people will drive past/look at you like you have done it on purpose and are insane!! ..but when I had to push my arosa 1/2 mile to the garage I had 3 people help me and my bro in law on the way. (Although also had one woman yell at us that we had no chance of getting it there!)

Hello everyone, my names John from Newbury, Berkshire Iv`e just joined the site to check out what`s on here. I`m a member of the NSRA and have been doing cars for over 40years.In that time Iv`e owned many cars mostly customs and yanks. I just sold a 56 chevy pick up and now Iv`e bought a 1952 Tempo Matador pick up from a motor dealer in Poole. It was in his private collection so had never been in his showroom or on his forecourt. I`m doing some work on it at the moment and haven`t had much chance to take any pictures but if you Google it you will see what it looks like. If you put in 1952 Tempo Matador pick up it will be the one that`s light volkswagon blue with Kia dark blue wings and tilt cover. Let me know what you think. Cheers John

Had a similer situation afew years back. Comming off the motorway the traffic had slowed up and it turned out there was an elderly couple who had broken down and were stuck in the second lane with their hazzards on. everyone else had just gone past them and continued on their way. I wasnt driving so as we went past i told lady friend to stop, i got out the car and pushed them to the end of the slip road and out of harms way. Lady friend was impressed with my niceness (etc etc), i just did it out of a natural reaction from seeing a fellow motorist in trouble, and being an elderly couple it goes without saying that youd help them out, having said that anyone would have got the same treatment. I think theres more chance now of people being wary of others, thinking there might be some sort of setup, going on the defensive, stuff happens, plus most people are in a rush to be somewhere now and just havnt got the time or inclination to help others. Shame.

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate event. I know very well how it feels to be on the receiving end of a stare. A good few years ago we had a vehicle with 32 miles from new on the clock which had the rear subframe come loose on the motorway. As you can expect it caused quite a bit of carnage, a chap pulled over at the side of the motorway just to get out and laugh... It really does make you wonder about the standard of people you're dealing with.
I always try to stop where possible, and have actually got up and gone out looking for someone when I've been told of where they are. I remember following a chap on a sports bike who seemed to be having a pretty good time when he came to a fairly abrupt stop and pulled over. I followed him into the lay by which he rolled into and asked what was up. They said they'd run out of fuel and cursed a bit. I offered to run him to the petrol station, they took their helmet off and it turned out to be a woman (should never assume I know!) who insisted if I was going to drive her anywhere it was to the pub up the road. Dropped her off and that was that.
It does suck, I always try and do it myself, because if it was me or a member of my family you would like the same done in return.

I think it's people. Everyone seems so self absorbed now, anyone else is in the way to me me me.
I'll stop and help people, most of the time when it looks like they need help. The thing is that now you are looked at like you have two heads. I was told by a guy stalled in the middle of an highway ramp, that no he didn't want any help or a push to the side of the road, he was calling the aa

As above.
I came across a chap in a new Passat at a pretty obscure surfing spot. It's a very steep field and with the heavy rain he had slid to the bottom of the field and was very stuck. I packed all of my stuff up and left in my 4x4. I went over and asked if he needed a hand, he propmtly turned me down and looked at me as if I was a talking horse or something of that sort. I got in my truck and as I left he had kicked his very dainty misses out in an attempt to push him out... It was never going to happen.
Now a good few years later you can still see the spot that he got stuck in, I can only imagine he was pulled out by a tractor!

Remember the bystander effect will come into affect here. That will be something that will affect people of 100 years ago (if motorways and cars to run on them existed) and for people in 100 years.

Not quite the same, but a couple of days ago a poppy wreath had blown off the local war memorial in the strong winds we were getting. I only saw it as it had blown into the gutter and risked getting crushed. Not one person had stopped to put it back on the memorial, even though it was right outside a busy Doctors/pharmacy/ambulance depot. I stopped the van, walked back to pick it up, then walked up the street to place it on the memorial.

Okay well I'll chime in my "good deed":
There was a girl on the train (gender doesn't matter though) I'd estimate about 13? 14 tops. Frankly she was a bit... well she wasn't a Jaguar owner, let's put it that way. She was also very loud on the phone to her mother who was trying to reassure her everything was fine. She kept saying stuff like "This train ain't gunna stop at Lostock. Why you making me do this oh my gawwwd"
So I put down my laptop, walked out of the carriage back onto the platform and looked at the digital billboard; having done this lengthy task of 30 seconds, I went back and notified this girl that the train does stop at Lostock. I wanted to be very snide, in fact, but I kept my cool and just smiled. She didn't even thank me; she kept on talking on the phone "Okay mum some man just said it does stop"
Anyway, I felt good inside that I'd helped someone when no one else on the carriage bothered. Regardless for it was.

My wife and I were out in Oxford, (actually she was my gf at the time) we're walking down to the Odeon and its mobbed, old boy was crossing the road, he tripped in the road and fell, hard, loads of people stood watching, I barged through a bunch of air sacks to get to him and pick him, my misses helped him, made sure he was ok etc (she was a student nurse)
I then mouthed off (a lot) to the scum standing watching, this old boy was easily 90, I'm not a little guy, I'm 6'2" and 19 stone lol,
I was and am still discusted at some people's behaviour, what if it was their grandparent etc.

Most people just don't want to know,it's the i'm alright jack and me me me attitude that seems to pervade society. I know i'm getting more cynical the older i get but i really have largely lost faith in human nature which is sad.
I've stopped to help loads over the years, some i maybe shoudn't have like a guy in a Corrado who nearly ran me off the road overtaking on a blind bend down a rural B road. Two bends later i came across him again when he'd lost it and put it through a hedge.Like a fool i stopped and helped him rag the remains of the bumper off, changed a wheel and got him away again.
I once got flagged down in a ropey bit of Leeds by a girl in a Golf with the bonnet up,i was in the garage van which was probably why. As i walked over she dived under the golf's seat and pulled an axe out which she explained was her protection as a lone female motorist! Bit disconcerting that one.. Once she was happy i was harmless she was fine and i got the Golf going, only a loose battery earth clamp.

I was heading into town one day with the family. Car ahead of me had a very soft tyre so i flashed/beeped etc till he stopped. Turned out to be a real old gent and his wife. So I popped the boot, got the tools ,changed the wheel, tidied up etc. And they were so grateful they tried to pay me!! And got tearful when I just told them no thanks and started to go. Turns out they got rode by a lad who "helped" them to new tyres, brakes, wipers etc at a local shop the last time they got a flat....

I always try to pull over and help when driving or walking if I see anyone stuck in any regard. It used to be called common human decency, but it's some time since humankind was decent, and now it's uncommon decency. But hence cometh the fall of man...
Early this year on a b road I passed an old tart doing 40 and hitting the brakes every time a car passed the other way. Went round a corner and the back tyre blew out and fired me into the hedge and wrote off the car. I clambered out once the shock had passed, and said oul doll comes round, winds window down and says "well that's just what you deserve after driving far too fast". "What?" I said. "I was doing 50mph. I'm alright, thanks for asking" and she scoffed and drove off.
Thankfully, a nicer lady coming the other way stopped, was also disgusted at the attitude, and willingly turned around and took me in to town so I could get my girl out of school. So both sides shown in the space of a couple of minutes.

some time back we was following an A class in traffic that looked quite tidy and had for sale sign in back window anyway traffic clears abit and the A class was not running straight (Crabbing a fair bit) so we got close enough for lisa to get the phone number off the for sale add and she text them saying that there car was crabbing, we went on our way and the owner messaged back saying they thought something was a miss as it didnt feel right hopefully they got it sorted.
6+ years ago I broke down with 3 female friends in the car at about 11:30 at night phoned family etc no one would come out to help. (id ran out of fuel) I'm stuck on a backroad (Lane pretty much out in the middle of nowhere) facing uphill with just hazzards going. a good 8+ miles to the nearest fuel station (On The M50 At ross) chap pulls up (the only car we'd seen in about 30 Mins) see's the problem and sais he just going home to get his fuel can then he will run one of us to the garage and back so we can get on our way.
we was pretty lucky and gratefull.
few winters back I'm on my way home, there was a highroof lwb transit broke down in the most awkward place possible facing uphill on a left hand bend cars just beeping and driving around. i pulled in front and asked if they was ok. they had ran out of diesel and Breakdown was on the way. i offered to tow them to the nearest layby which they didnt think was possible as they said they where most likley overweight I Hooked up my Frontera (2.0 sport) and doubled up the ropes that i used to carry. got going pretty easily and towed them to the nearest layby they where pleased but more so i think they where a little suprised.

I pulled into a layby on the A30 a few weeks back for a break. At the end of the parking area was an old gent trying to change a flat tyre. 2 other lorries were parked in the area but this guy was struggling on his won. I went over & offered to help which the gent gladly accepted. After I finished & a good chat about cars etc I was heart broken when his wife offered me money for my troubles. It was such a genuine offer I really did have a lump in my throat. I obviously refused as it was an act of kindness not for money but for humanity. The woman was astounded so I asked her to drop the money in a charity box if she was really that adamant. Lifes a funny thing,I'd just hope that if my wife was struggling to change a tyre some honest gent would help her.
