So. Not content with the Avenger Race car i decided i needed more car in my life so last year i went to Scotland and picked this up: IMG_0301 by Nevtiger, on Flickr It is a 1.3 LS in stunning Sweetcorn and orange tartan and brown interior. The plan is as follows: - Restore body work
- Seam weld and fit strengthening kit
- Fit roll cage
- Fit refurbished original interior.
- Fit AJ30 V6, 6 Speed ZF manual box and Volvo 1031 rear axle
Then enjoy it as any pampered Classic should be.

Nice! I like Sunbeams, so I'll be following this. You say it came from Scotland, did the car happen to come from a man who has loads of them in various guises, and is in the cement business?

Great cars - an old college friend of mine had two of these back in the late 80s. One of them was a Ti rally car, lots of fun

Back in 1988 when i left school started work at the local Peugeot/ Talbot dealer one of the mechanics had a bright red Ti version with Duck Tail spoiler. I was impressed by this and later owned it's bigger brother.....of sorts, the Horizon.

As it happens i have had in the past one Series 2 TI and two S1 Lotus Sunbeams. Each of those were good in their own way so i want to create my own version of what i think a Sunbeam should be....................

I had a Ti with a hot 2L pinto engine and a roll cage. It was running a diff from a 1.1 as the original one exploded. It would only do about 84 mph flat out, but it got there very quickly.

The chap does have lots of Sunbeams and a few other Classics as well! Not sure if he is in the Cement business - I thought it was BIG garage doors!!

Having got it home i had a really good look over the car and its remarkably clear of any major rust at all (this is going to change!). The 5 pieces of rust are shown in the following photos will all take a patch and don't need panel replacement at all! (yeah right - you wait till later) The biggest bit is the passenger door bottom, but as i have a set of S2 doors in stock i may fit these instead. The interior is in fine fettle and with really good clean will be good to go apart from the dash top which has lost its colour sadly. With the end of the season for OPK (this was written a while ago......) my attention turns to Mr T: I have decided to use the original doors even though they are not as in a good as condition as my series 2 doors for reason of trim and mirrors and now i have a full set of Green Glass too. Starting with the passenger door we see this: image by Nevtiger, on Flickr image by Nevtiger, on Flickr image by Nevtiger, on Flickr Thats a bit crusty so i need to start cutting some of it out: image by Nevtiger, on Flickr Thats with the bottom skin removed ready to cut the frame rot out. image by Nevtiger, on Flickr Not so bad on this corner but still some cut away and all along the bottom of the door. Right now to start the slow process of learning how to shape metal and let it in so nobody can tell.............

The passenger door is now done and proved quite a job to remake all the bottom, this is my first time at making new 'parts' so i started with some where where people are not going to be looking too much..... SO i started on the easier end first! the right hand corner has been welded in and was easy to make, then the bottom return: IMG_0972 by Nevtiger, on Flickr IMG_0971 by Nevtiger, on Flickr IMG_0402 by Nevtiger, on Flickr Weld and more weld. As it happens i did not start at one end and carry on like that it was tacked along its whole length, honest: IMG_0403 by Nevtiger, on Flickr Then started to be cleaned up, i bought myself a power file. Glad i did, what a tool: IMG_0405 by Nevtiger, on Flickr So with the easy bits done it was down to the other end and have a go at double compound curves.......... In the end i made the part three times before i was happy and even then i had to do it in two sections to get the curves right: The inside edge still needs to be turned up and this is what gave me so much hassle: IMG_0973 by Nevtiger, on Flickr IMG_0974 by Nevtiger, on Flickr I don't think i will get a job doing this sort of thing yet! but it will be strong and will look good when the door is shut..... IMG_0404 by Nevtiger, on Flickr All done and ready for the skin: IMG_0406 by Nevtiger, on Flickr After finishing the door it was time to start on the drivers footwell as this again will be hidden but this time under the carpet so a chance to do some more practice............ IMG_0983 by Nevtiger, on Flickr Not looking forward to getting my head in there to try and see what i am welding and it proved to be bloody hard. At least the jacking point looks good from the inside: IMG_0985 by Nevtiger, on Flickr

Nice work. I had a very rough 1.6 LS in about 1989,it was rotten everywhere but went really well.
I remember being quite suprised the engine had Rootes Group stamped on it,was that normal for Sunbeams?

A bit later in this thread you will see the seam welding of that join.......

Regarding the dash, could Vinylcote be used? I think it can be mixed to any colour....this may be worth looking in to.
