New windscreen rubber in... I admit... I bottled it and let the experts do it, and I'm glad I did. It took two blokes - with everything they might need close at hand - less than an hour to do it with no fuss, and it cost very little. They were both retro car owners, and we had some good chats and laughs about old cars. Really pleased with the work and service. Can thoroughly recommend these fellas to anyone Brighton way who wants windows fitted or interiors created/modified etc... They are very much into old cars.... autoscreen.co.uk/Doing it myself, in the street, with nothing but my wits would have been a day of swearing and sweating... I know because I did my Bedford CF2 and vowed never to attempt it by myself again. Now I have to touch up the paint around the new seal but very happy with the new seal.

You're speaking too soon George... I've still got to do an emergency stop and watch the glass fly out and decapitate a cyclist yet. I'll get pics.

Funny though... The Scimitar specialists I brought the rubber off said it was cut to perfect length and warned me DO NOT CUT IT DOWN. IT FITS. ITS EXACTLY RIGHT.
After they'd got it tight on and right into the corners, and I'm going "Yeah it does fit so don't cut it" it was still about a foot too long. We had a bit of fun with me going "No you can't cut it" and them going "we've been doing this for 20+ years and that is never going to go in" until I had to admit it was bloody ridiculous and i let them cut it down to a generous overlap of their recommendation.
My best guess is they sent me the length for an SE6... But I don't even know if the 6 uses the same seal.

No, the 6 uses a different seal completely as the screen is larger than the hole in the body shell and uses a āZā profile seal.
If it leaks now, then Iāll enjoy saying ātold you soā..

If it leaks now, then Iāll enjoy saying ātold you soā.. Ya big meanie. There was no way the excess could have been pulled in. They rammed it into each corner. I insisted they wrestle it in because it was the right length. There was no way at all it was the right length. I've got a 12" of offcut in my glove box. I'm going to get in touch with GW and ask them to confirm they send out the exact length or whether they go over. We'd literally have been there for days attempting to take that much in.

You're worrying me now Phil! Looking at that pic up there... Of the excess... In your experience would you have attempted to fight that in? Genuine question, I'm keen to know. If it now shrinks down and leaks I'll have to do the whole lot again but I honestly don't know how I, or they, would be able to get that in. They cut it with a good 1-2" overlap in the end. The car came to me with a chunky 1"+ hole in the rubber on the drivers pillar, so I have to assume that was the result of settling a d shrinkage. In which case we're good. You're making me overthink. Getting clammy. Brain is spinning. Sweating and clenching. *Rocks back and forth in corner*

There was a point not so very long ago where the footwell of my work desk was over-ran with oceans of very dubious looking rubber extrusions, mouldings and tubing... All purchased off the internet in the hope they would serve a purpose on my car and all of them entirely useless to me. It looked like an S&M octopus was squatting under there.

Anyway, I suspect Phil is thoroughly enjoying remaining silent now he's thrown me a doubt grenade (nothing at all to do with him possibly being busy), but I feel confident it was too long and here's why... The fill strip, which is rigid and plastic, was also way too long, and there's no way at all you could crush that down by a foot to make it fit, yet the supplier also told me that was the correct length too.
So I'm going to cast doubt aside and enjoy my new rubber.
Until it rains, probably.

In answer to your earlier question, yes - I did fight the whole thing in on my own. Thatās why I donāt fancy doing another one!

That does seem to be too long (even though I also say never cut it) - I wonder if it was for a GTC?

Iām busy trying to get rid of a sodding cold... Didnāt it seem odd they were BOTH ātoo longā?.. Well no, not really. I can entertain the idea that an extra foot of rubber - after totally ramming it hard into the frame - might be forced to compress and accommodate that much extra in a fixed, rigid, non-flexible aperture. But the bead is absolutely not going to compress, and was also about a foot too long. So the closed version of that piece would be a considerable Xcm greater in circumference than the window aperture. It would need to be running around the outside far edge of the entire coverage area to work. The thing is... I'm willing to be humble and admit it if it transpires that this thing leaks like crazy and I end up with a 12" hole along the bottom of my windscreen. But as the two blokes who did it said... They've been doing classic cars for 20+ years. There is nothing fundamentally special or different about this rubber on this car to many others, and none of the others they've ever done have required them to force a foot of extra rubber in. I'm really not sticking my neck out and challenging your far greater experience and knowledge, and if this rubber swap smacks me on the I will have no qualms at all about declaring it in the interests of others doing a rubber swap in the future. I will however, be utterly amazed, and would love to see the full thing being fitted without trimming it down. If it has to be done again it's no great financial hardship, but I will be doing it myself next time and will be making extensive posts as my world gradually falls apart around me!

If itās any consolation, it took me 3 goes to get the rubber to fit the body - each time pushing it further and further into the corners. I did fit it slightly different the final time - marked the middle of the aperture and the rubber, lined those bits up and then just kept going until there was no slack.

That does seem to be too long (even though I also say never cut it) - I wonder if it was for a GTC? Yay! Here comes Jim to make me feel a bit better about things. Don't know how I missed this comment earlier. I think this whole "Don't cut it" thing needs to be quantified. GW and QRG need to say "the rubber is Xcm long and that's the right length"... Otherwise if they send out a too long piece and"don't cut it" is law there are going to be some very desperate people out there! Cheers Jim. *weeps in gratitude* It's going to be okay.
