Do you think? I quite like them being longer. Breaks up the vast emptiness of the door card a bit. Also makes it easier to pull the door when it's fully open. It's the same length as the red leather thing that's always been there since I got the car, and despite disliking the way it looked, it was very handy. = ) Shot of handle before with the red pleather... This shot is from two years ago, taken on the day I brought the car home. It's amazing that the door interior doesn't look that bad here. I think that is partly because it's quite a dark shot, but also because the door cards were, I suspect, newly made at the time and looked flat and black. Two years later, they were bowed and warped and covered in white mould. Weather sealing activities have been part-and parcel of this spate of improvements.

Keep going mate, it all looks good to me. Great to see you making the old girl look tidier... Monty still locked up in hibernation but March will be here soon. May pop down in him and have a look round the Scim 👍 Hi Paul, good to hear from you. I'm at the very start of trying to make her look tidier now. Lots to do though. It's such a non-standard car already that I feel more liberated to do whatever I want to do than I ever did with Monty (granted Monty is also trifficly non-standard but he deserved more of a preservation approach than a 'slap a bit of plastic on it' approach). It doesn't matter on this car, and I don't care if it's correct or not... I just don't do anything that couldn't ever be done properly if a future owner wanted to do it right. Hibernation sounds like a good place for Monty to be right now... this weather is bloody horrible. Not sure if you know but there's a RR Gathering at Goodwood in May. A few of us have c̶o̶b̶b̶l̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶g̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ founded a s̶l̶a̶p̶d̶a̶s̶h̶ prestigious car club called the BNMAC. If you felt like joining us to display Monty or any other of your impressive fleet of cars, let me know! And yes, if you're going to be out and about and you want to head down this way let me know... would be great to catch up!

Google clearly know how to identify a target audience for a niche product... Just ordered mine. I am the emporer of BNMAC, so I need something to signify my elevated stature.

I'm great at selling cars I am. Enquirier: "Hi, I saw you offered your car up for a swap on RR this week. Would you be interested in selling it?" Me: "If you buy this car, everyone you know and love will be crushed by a lorry and will die painfully in a fire" Enquirer:

But where's the fun in that Phil? Where's the humanity? Hands reaching out across the void, compassion and understanding, sound advice and friendly guidance along the road to a happy ever after? I like to really connect with people, get to the heart of the matter, find the soul and connect to it meaningfully to create an impression that will last a lifetime. I'm just... I'm just that kind of guy. An old softy with a heart of coal. It's why I wear these boots...

Funny... my wife often says the exact same thing. Have you two ever met? == I just took the Scim out for a blast to road test the new door cards. Much much faster now. I think it's added at least 30bhp. I went to Cliffords, our local autoparts emporium which has just announced it's closing its doors. It was full of grown men on their knees, crying and pleading with the owners to reconsider. No chance... they're not even interested in a buy out if one were offered. Anyway, I was there to try and get some trim to finish my doors. I ordered some stuff of ebay that looked the ticket but it wont work. Cliffords similarly didn't have much of anything but I have bought some flat-topper rubber U-channel stuff and a roll of aluminium tape. I think as a short term fix to stop the vinyl cover fraying off from the upper edge of the door, I'm going to have to do some fancy footwork with aluminium tape as trim with the rubber U-channel underneath it. Ultimately I think I'll need to try and fold my own permanent trim out of metal. I get so bored of ordering stuff and then it doesn't fit or look right, but it was too cheap to be bothered to return it so it all just sits under my desk like a rabid automotive octopus of doom. Anyone got any good leads on something that will rigidly cover this and look semi-decent?

Hi there
I often fit bonded windows into campers and use a knock on edging around the cut aperture.
Its wire reinforced and very tough. Any automotive glazing compant should sell you a bit
cheers - mike

I had a look at that at Cliffords. You mean this stuff, right? I expected it to be malleable... ie I could drop it on and then push it closed around the door panel. But it's not, it's springy and largely returned to its original shape. Also it's not deep enough to cover the entire indent panel at the top of the door... so it would have been a bit of a bodger that protected the edge of the vinyl but looked bad. What I really need is some long strips of 3" wide lead or lead substitute that I can easily bend into the right section myself and then paint and drop on.

use a knock on edging around the cut aperture. Cheers Mike. I just had a quick google around for knock-on edge trim and there's a fair few options coming up. I do really want to get something that I can pinch into a secure fixing so that they're not constantly flying off out of the window every time I or a passenger winds the window down and puts their elbow out. I think I might need to get creative with some soft roofing flashing material.

hi again
the stuff i use is quite flexible and keeps its shape once applied but its the same dimensions as the one you tried.
I have seen deeper trim but never needed to use it.
cheers

hi again the stuff i use is quite flexible and keeps its shape once applied but its the same dimensions as the one you tried. I have seen deeper trim but never needed to use it. cheers Hey Mike, may I ask you a question about windscreen rubbers given that you're in the business of refurbing vehicles and refitting glass and whatnot... My SE5a has always had a very shabby windscreen rubber. I always planned to change it but I patched it up as a short term measure and two year's later it's still there doing its job. It does now look even worse for wear though. There's just been some chat on the Modified Scimitar group on Facebook about changing windscreen rubbers. The upshot of which is that the 'proper' seal offered by QRG is apparently pretty terrible, leaks like crazy and costs £300. One person has posted a picture of a non-Scim rubber seal he's got on his Scim, which was supplied by the fitter he used to do the job. He says it works very well and looks very tidy too. Would you happen to know anything about what my options are for looking at generic rubber seals for a Scim? Here's the pic of the one off the Modified Scimitar FB group... ... obviously thats also a heated windscreen, which I wont be fitting, but I wonder if it's possible to identify a rubber going only by an external shot like this? Reason for asking is I just made a couple of initial enquiries with local independent windscreen fitters who claim to do classic cars, but all they did was look on their computer and say "no, Pilkington don't list a rubber for that car, sorry". Also... can anyone else tell me how one goes about using a member's name in a post in such a way that it becomes a live yellow linky thing that alerts them to the post? I just can't figure it out at all.

If that's a certain Diesel-powered two-tone 6a (which I think it is - datsundrew of this parish), then the SE6-series screen is larger than the aperture, so lends itself to being bonded in (hence that's a "bonded screen" seal) and what he had done. I've seen the conventional type screen seal (obviously with the correct thickness for fitting to GRP - NOT one for a Mini, but one for kit cars where it fits into a fibreglass frame) used equally on GTEs rather than the correct "double-lip" type for a Scimitar (mine doesn't leak and I fitted it myself).

The pic belongs to a chap called Drew over on Modified Scimitar (FB). Is that the fella? (edit: Just realised what you're leftwith if you delete the 'datsun' from his user name, and also just checked a few posts here and it is indeed the same fella, with his fancy opening side windows!) mine doesn't leak and I fitted it myself. I didn't want to bother you with this because I worry that you're always the one answering my questions, but can I just ask this one thing.... do you have a reference for the one you fitted Phil, so I can be sure to order something that stands a good chance of being right? The pile of 'not right' rubber stuff under my desk is threatening to take over the whole house.

I just manned up and got it from Graham Walker. Reason being I only wanted to do it once..
It's likely to be the same seal offered by QRG (as it's an odd ball profile, so the same batch probably fed both suppliers (as they do talk to each other) but the 6-series screen fits totally different to a 5-series screen and uses a totally different seal so it like comparing apples to cuttlefish.

Ah right yes, I forgot you've got a 6. Ehhhh *sigh* just drove the car up to a local independent windscreen place in the hope that seeing it in the flesh might prompt a bit of free-thinking rather than just tapping a computer keyboard and saying "no". They're happy to do it for me, but I would still need to supply them with the rubber. I will also need the metal insert key-rod that holds it in as well, as mine has cracked in a few places. Having looked at it myself more closely before setting off though, the quite sharp curves of the bottom corners where it has to make a curve round the glass edge whilst also curving back around the swoop of the screen to the pillar, does kind of rule out much hope of using a generic 'off the roll' rubber. I reckon it would just buckle inside at that point. Oh well, on to Graham Walker and QRG then I guess. This has now, just today, all of a sudden, become the thing that's bugging me most about my car now. I really should stop reading Scimitar discussions
