I know the z3 is now classed as a retro Well that's very matter of fact. Is there a publication which classifies these things? I can't keep up. I don't think the Z3 is there just yet. Asking about the Z4 is not something you can do for YEARS. It's a very modern design - even for its time. I have a Y-reg Fiat which I don't think is retro, but threads like this are making me doubt myself. May have to take it to the gathering...

The Z3 certainly isn't retro under the ethos of this forum/community*, so the Z4 certainly can't be considered it either* * unless it has cool modifications and made interesting¹¹ - Retro Rides Podcast #5: What is Retro? -

So to answer the OP's question. If you modify anything it becomes retro. like this: ^ Retro. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your keyboards.

Just modifying a car doesn't make it retro, otherwise all the lads who park their 2 year old fiestas along the seafront on a Friday night would be retro too. I think you can have Retro style (new fiat 500, PT Cruiser, etc), and real retro (anything up to mid 90s) Go listen to the Podcast I linked, it's an age range of 1965 to 1995, or outside those years IF modified AND interesting (or just plain interesting but not modified). So it's not just modifying, but modifications which are cool or interesting (in a positive way).

Oh good... this thread again. Well up to 95 was agreed to be retro. I don't think the z4 is anywhere near retro at all. The z3 maybe in a few years. Retroness aside, I actually really like both cars. Where does admin draw a line? Should threads about modern cars that clearly aren't retro be removed? But the way I'm not telling admin how to do their job, I'm just curious on people's opinions on this, should threads like this one be on retro rides?

We're actually a fairly broad church (as per the podcast).. so if someone popped up and said "Hey check out this cool wide body Z4* I found" and then posted this We could look at it and say "hey that gives me a cool idea for something you could do to a Lotus Elan**" or whatever... also it is of some interest to people. However it isn't retro. So it is the nature of the question really, the answer is relatively obvious. It would be like starting a thread saying "Is my Austin A35 retro?" ... well yes. That doesn't make it a good thread. If you see what I mean. *May not be a Z4, I dunno. **It would upset quite a few people too.

I struggle to find MX5s retro, let alone a Z3. lol
A Z4?! Not a chance.
By this yard stick, my 2000 E320 wagon is retro! (I really don't believe it is)
Just because a car is no longer listed on 'Warranty Direct' doesn't mean it's retro, it's just older

Its what you make of it etc etc
My boss has just got a BMW 1 series coupe in grey with red m3 interior. Not many modern cars i truley like, but the shape of it has a look about it that appeals to me, and its only a couple of years old.
I think people think too much about the 'is it retro' question, like as if it actualy matters, like its going to make a huge difference to the car or its going to lay a golden egg on the day it becomes something that, lets face it. is all in the mind. Its what you make of it. So go grab a z4, slam it on banded steels and call it vintage/classic/retro/old.

I have a z4 2.5 smg which I drive every day frankly its awesome and I wouldnt swap it for the world- but is it retro? no I don't think so- bearing in mind its based on and e46- we wouldnt call that a retro. But is it a future classic? I think it is- great engine and chassis and infinately upgradeable it has some love it or hate it lines and a great interior (if you have the right trim options) one day a retro but not yet!

Was thinking about this earlier, even the first e46 is 18 years old now so when will it be classed as retro. Some Z3s are 20 years old. As said earlier modern cars even 15 year old ones drive like modern cars. Retro is more of a state of mind, also depends how old you are. A 1996 z3 will seem like an old car to a 20 year old.

Personally I always consider something as retro if it's in keeping with an older style or fashion... Such as a similar shape to an old MG with long bonnets, low to ground and seats almost over the rear axle
The z3 or z4 could have retro styling but not be a retro car
But if you're also talking classic, then I'd consider then both to be future classics irrelevant of their styling Just my way of looking at things
