This is not a happy sale but I'm having a reality check and although I bought it as a drive-as-you-go project, it is only a matter of time before I sort the niggles, slam it and forget about the truck I'm meant to be building.
'89 F150 2wd long bed 4.9 EFI l6 5 speed manual in Matt Black. 10 months MOT.
Was originally an XLT or a Lariat judging by the electric Windows, sliding rear window, power locks, carpeting, trim, headlining and the silver door shuts.
For those who aren't familiar with American trucks, the big sixes are something of a gem. They give more torque low down than the equivalent 5.0 V8 (Chevrolet did a 4.8 which is what I am using in my '63) - I have had small blocks and personally wouldn't again. You don't have to go much past 2200 (which in a nigh on 5 ltr engine still sounds pretty burly!) as peak torque is under 2000rpm so short shift and enjoy the usable power from off-idle.
The manual gearbox is not overly agricultural but don't expect MX5 type shifting (that's pretty obvious). MPG wise - for those who consider it important - it depends on how you drive it but I did just about 200 miles on 40 quid at 70 mph. Town driving will obviously be thirstier. I run the (very good condition) stock-size tyres at 42 psi so a firm ride but less drag. TBH i don't buy these for economy so I don't care - I just put fuel in, enjoy, repeat. Talking of fuel, twin tanks, switchable, working.
Interestingly this truck has less body roll than the '97 I had. There are anti-roll bars front and rear. Steering is power assisted and pretty light. It is a more solid 'truck' feeling truck than the '97 was which I like.
Bodywork is pretty good considering it has been in the country since 1992. There are some dents on the rear of the roof presumably from where someone has leaned materials against it. A few small dents here and there. The bed is MINT. The only grot is about 1 1/2" on the offside rear arch. It has been covered in colour-coordinated gaffer tape (by me - it had battered looking chrome arch trims which I removed to check for rust, sanded and rattle - canned the arches to almost match the rest of the truck). I also quickly masked the horrific red inside the grille and the wheels and rattle-canned them. I will say in all honesty that the pics could be considered flattering, it is a 10 footer.
So....what does it need? That depends on what you want from it. There is some play in the steering which would probably be resolved by looking at the linkage although it passed an MOT (no pet tester of mine). The drivers side window needs assistance to fully close. The headlights have been modified for usefulness which horrified me initially but I'm getting used to it and can actually see at night. It has a non-standard heater setup (which works) but I'd go somewhere like DB motors and get a factory setup back in and a Mercedes radiator which is unshrouded (but still works, I have changed both coolant temp senders as the gauge wasn't working and it was making me paranoid). There are squeaks and rattles. The chassis at some point has been painted in something silver-like which has almost entirely flaked off so there is SURFACE rust. It is solid, but unsightly. There are probably other things.
It needs slamming (you could go down 150mm if you mind speed bumps) and a slightly smaller tyre would make this hilarious fun without too much loss of top end speed.
Ok, essay over....pics. Here's a few and if you want more then please ask - I can email, iMessage or whatsapp so PM me your number.
As per title, £2750 Ono. I will move on price but 'what's your best price' and other nonsense will be ignored unless you have actually viewed or pounded me with enough questions to make me think you might actually be interested. Poss. P/X for something usable as a daily....I'm fussy but eclectic so try me.
Thanks for reading.
