Top chopped J4 Gasser for me, all day long! Back in the 60s before I was old enough to drive (legally) a mate had a J4 similar to this with a Westie motor, Downton head and 3x40DHLAs. The front bumper was a railway sleeper mounted on 2 coil springs, which he used to push start dragsters in the early days at Santa Pod. Sadly the van is long gone, but my memories keep it alive.

Hats off to whoever did!! 👍🏻😆 It's actually relatively simple, you chop the side panels about halfway up, because the pillars are almost vertical, only a small amount of metal needs to go into the middle and nothing to or from the centreline. The tricky bit (according to my old friend) was cutting down the sliding side doors and making them work. Apparently he used up 6 or 8 doors before he got it right! Steve I've always had a soft spot for the J4, as an apprentice, my company had the contract to maintain EMI records' fleet of the things. one of my best memories of those days, is roaring around flat out on road test with the sliding doors latched back. Good Times! |
