Why on earth would you want to fit an Ecotec poo lump in one - they're bad enough in most Vauxhalls?! I'm not going to get into a long debate about the pros and cons of the Ecotec. All i'll say is "have you ever worked on a Sprint engine?" The Ecotec is a model of efficiency and reliability by comparison! And the Aisin/Warner transmission behind it (it's a Z22xe with less than 70k original miles) is just about bulletproof! The car is not designed to be a racer, I have the Carledo for that! This is supposed to be a long legged and reasonably economical and comfortable long distance cruiser. I have high hopes for it! Steve
Have to say, I think the Dolomite Sprint is all about the original 16valve twin cam motor . . . .put an Ecotec in a lesser Dolomite by all means, but not the Sprint. Just my humble opinion.

Yeah I know! I've ruined it! Worse than that, i've ruined a rare (less than 60 surviving) Sprint auto! But that is a different thread! If I don't sound repentant, it's cos i'm not!
PS point of order, The original Sprint engine does have 16 valves, but only ONE cam! I have one of those too, another Hens Tooth auto, which will retain it's original powertrain!

The reason i'm not repentant is that the donor Sprint looked like THIS when I bought it and no-one else wanted to take it on! Steve

You are of course absolutely correct - the Sprint engine does only have the one cam . . . . unless you carry a spare one in the boot . . . .

Fair play to you carledo, and sorry if I upset you about the Ecotec engine; I just happened to have a bad experience a few years ago, with a 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier CDX with 2-litre Ecotec, and had never ending problems with it cutting out at the worst possible moments, I think mostly down to the Siemens engine (mis)management it had. It eventually blew its head gasket, and I quite readily passed it up for scrap! Shame, as it was a nice car otherwise.
Anyway, my 2003 Mini Cooper has the Chrysler Tritec engine which also has a 16-valve but single-cam engine, and it runs very nicely indeed.
I seem to remember the Dolly Sprint engines were problematic, but I suppose they were pioneering the technology and pushing the engineering envelope somewhat, so it's excusable...

slightly off topic but tenuously linked, Iβm doing the Round Britain Reliability Run with my mate in his MK1 Triumph saloon in October. 2000 miles in 48 hours. There's a coincidence, so am I! In the Vauxhall powered Sprint in my pic if I can get it finished in time, or the Carledo if it isn't! I crewed in a mate's Sprint in 2018 and we completed sucessfully in 50hrs 1 minute with 2166 miles on the trip. But for complete satisfaction, I want to do it in my own car, even if I did do the lion's share of the prep on the 2018 car!
I'll see you at Knebworth (and elsewhere around the UK hopefully)
Steve
Ok cool, see you there. We will be in a white MK1 saloon with beige Alfa Romeo front seats. Before that tho Iβll be doing the coast to coast run in April in my Stag.

I'm not upset dude, many years of controversial conversions have thickened my skin no end!
Oddly enough, I also own a 95 Cav 2.0 GLS Ecotec! It's now the wrong side of 150k and still pulls like a train and uses no oil or water. I must have got the good one! I did briefly have the fail to idle issue, made worse by the fact mine is an auto, but a few minutes work and a second hand idle control valve fixed that. I have to admit the Ecotec is not universally popular, I had my doubts when buying the 16v Cav, all my (many) previous Cavs had been 8 valvers, but it was too good to miss, mint saloon body, right colour (black) good service history and cheap as chips (Β£400 in July 2006) Time has proven it to be a good buy!
I went to a similar amout of trouble to get the donor Omega for the Sprint conversion, buying the torquier 2.2 to get a better auto hauler and buying a low mileage, well cared for car. As it came with 5 months tax and test, I drove it around till they expired and got the feel of it, it would have been rude not to!
Think i'd better let this thread get back on topic now!
Steve

The blue Stag used to belong to a guy I sort of knew.I have been around Le Mans in that at around 120mph! It has a 4.0 litre TVR engine (Rover V8) and went like stink and sounded like thunder! He sold it a few years ago. I do like Triumphs.

I'm rather partial to Triumphs myself!
