I've recently bought a mk2 breadvan and I want to upgrade it to a 5 speed. I've got a mate that's a mechanic that has said he'll fit it for me if I can find one, the only problem is I don't have a clue what I'm looking for. He told me to find out which box fits my engine, which mounting fits the box and something about a new gear linkage. But I don't even know where to start!
It's a G reg and a 1.3 engine if that makes a difference.
Also what's the benefits between either a 5 speed or 4 + e?
Cheers

Get on clubpolo and if you're on Facebook join Mk1-3 Polo page. Loads of information about the gearboxes and which ones are best.

Is that a worthwhile upgrade? I found the 4-speed had quite good ratios and was quite nice to use. I suppose if you want to bring your cruising RPMs down the overdrive 5th might be handy.

Cheers I'll have a look on the mk1-3 page now. I'm going to be doing a fair amount of motorway journeys so I think it will be a bit more comfortable with a new box

I might be well off the mark here but when these were nearly new a relative had one with the 4+e box and said the 5th gear was a waste of time as it hadn't got the guts to pull it. No idea what capacity the engine in it was though. Just remembered the conversation.

Mine's a 1.3 so hopefully that shouldn't be an issue. Cheers though
