Hi.
Since my 164 was sold and cash was burning my pocket I made a mistake and took a look for 4 door Amazons on web.
And found couple of them. In Holland.
Asked local Volvo Club to help with car check up (they were extremely helpful guys and went to check the car) so I and ended up with one car that was in my price range and reasonable condition (thats what I thought from the beginning. )
It was 1966 4 door white pearl Amazon build in Belgium that should have B18D engine and 4 speed manual box.
It is 3 owners car and last one was using the car occasionally for small distances. It needed some body things to be addressed and interior bits, but looked like sound car to start with.
So I headed towards Netherlands city Vouw in order to pick up the car.
Landed in Amsterdam
Next morning took a train to Roosendaal.
Owner met me at the central station. Looked on the car and it was looking quite ok except there was oil leakage from the valve cover gasket.
So we made a money/paper exchanged and got a export plates.
And off I went.
Before 2000 km trip back home I wanted to check the car at the Classic Volvo Shop www.volvo-klassiekers.nl/ in Berneveld.
There car was checked what should be done.
Like there is need of welding for the front floor and rocker panels.
Changed the plugs, leads and dizzy cap.
Valve cover gasket was changed as well.
Car was an overheating in the traffic jams, so wanted to sort out the thermostat issue, but to surprise me there was no thermostat there. That made me a bit nervous.
I bought as well suspension bushings and new Simons exhaust as well, since old was rusty and crusty.
And there I went home on my Amazonaizing trip.
After some 200 km I stopped at fuel tank to fill up and check the oil leakage and found that engine is all over with oil again!!!!!
Didnt bother too much, topped up and went further.
So I reached German/Poland border just before midnight.
Went to bed and woke up early to go further with my trip.
After some 5 km. I noticed that engine overheats dramatically, so I stopped.
Figured out that rest of the 1200 km will not make it. Parked the car and went of for search of bus to get home.
Found bus station and somehow figured out where I can get to bigger town for bus to Warsaw.
While traveling with bus met nice chap that helped me and explained that it is better to take train to Warsaw and which one it is.
When I left the bus I realized that my wallet with all the money, documents credit cards has slipped out of my jacket's pocket and was in that bus that headed away from me!!!!!!
That was not the best feelings I must say.
Went to central station and asked help there. As I didnt knew where that bus was heading it was hard to help me to catch that bus. So Central Station worker agreed me to put on the train to Berlin instead so I can there go for plane. ( I could buy tickets online, but was not sure will anyone let me in without documents) So train came and before I went on it I got a call in Facebook from that guy I met in the bus!!!!!!!
He found my wallet, found me on facebook and called to say that wallet has been found and that bus driver will gave it back to me at that same bus stop I left.
CAN YOU IMAGINE MY RELEIFE?
Fast Forward I got my wallet - everything was there including money and documents.
Went to Berlin airport and flied back home.
Took my car and trailer and went to rescue Amazon back home.
After 26 hours car was delivered in my garage.
So I engine out it is.
When pistons came out it was quite obvious why it was overheating and blowing oil out.
All four pistons were toasted and with broken rings!!!!!
I am just wondering that this engine was running at all.
So today engine will be taken to the shop for block, head and crankshaft measurements and what could be skimmed bored and saved.
So stay tuned for updates.
