Hi, They're are called easi-outs and they are nothing of the sort. Don't waste your money on them. They will just snap off in the hole and thwart later attempts. At this stage and with your facilities, Go to the pro's, do not pass GO, do not collect £200. Colin I'd already bought them by the time I'd posted but yes you were right, still another £4 was worth a shot. Only one way to go with this is a large lump hammer and a cold chisel , they will be off in the shake of your doda ..

On the way to pick it up from the garage now. They tried turbo sockets, two blow torches at each end. Big hammers, levers, long bars, pretty much everything. A full drill through needed in the end! Relieved it wasn't just me!

Hi, Good, with limited facilities it's a wise man that knows when to withdraw gracefully before getting in too deep. Glad it's sorted.

Glad it's sorted, sounds like a nightmare even for a garage.

Relieved it wasn't just me! Can you explain what this means sorry? (The drilling) When all else fails sometimes the only way to get a bolt out is to drill it out. On my Viva the top front shocker bolt runs through a steel sleeve that corrodes solidly in place. You can remove the nut off one end but the bolt will not pull through because it is totally corroded into the sleeve. There is no access with an angle grinder to cut it out and it is inaccessible with a drill bit as the sleeve is at 90 degrees to the bodywork either side. So on mine the driver's side took 90 seconds to remove, the passenger side took me a full day wearing out every dremel bit and busting two 90 degree drill adapters. But that sweet moment when it finally comes out - how good that feels.

When you need to resort to drilling bolts out I'd highly recommend Cobalt drill bits. I got a set of Heller ones from Toolstation for about a tenner. They just munch through anything and hold their edge really well. Don't forget the lube though, and go slowly, on some types of bolt too much heat will harden the metal ahead of where you're drilling.

+1 on proper drill bits and going slow.
Also Butane / MAPP not really hot enough, oxyacetylene all the way - it heats far hotter and faster, exerting a much greater / more effective thermal shock.

when I get one like this I have learnt it's not worth my time messing about drilling out been there done that, there's a fantastic guy close to me that I take them to, so I take the whole hub and strut assembly off and whizz them down he charges me around £10 a side and he saves the captive thread as well
