Hello, hello.
I felt that I should quickly give you an update of what has recently joined the fleet. As it's not particularly retro I'll keep this short, but as the 996 was responsible for getting me to this point I hope you won't give me a hard time. Only a couple of weeks ago I ended up with this:
So as it turns out finding a decent 997 is indeed harder than finding a nice 996. I do admit that my preferred choices for colours and equipment eliminate about 95% of the market which made the search even tougher. It took me the most part of 2019 before finding this gem in the Netherlands:
It's a 2010 Carrera S in Macadamia Brown over brown natural leather. Its spec leans more towards the GT side of things including a PDK double-clutch gearbox, Bose sound system, Sport Chrono and lots of additional leather amongst other things which were eye-wateringly expensive back in the day. It's still as sharp to drive as the 996, but much more compliant on longer journeys compared to my old 996 with factory sports suspension (=read that as "brilliant in the twisties, but swerving around potholes becomes second nature").
So far I've managed to squeeze only one road trip in, but it wasn't the worst one.
My verdict so far is that a modern is not as reliable as a retro (fuel pump went on my way back home from Switzerland), uses less fuel while being a whole lot more powerful and feels like a significant step up from the previous generation. But most importantly: it makes me smile whenever I see it, drive it, wash it or even think about it. Which is a quality it shares with my old 996.
